LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A federal court has ruled that privately held 321 Studios must stop making software that allows users to copy DVDs, handing Hollywood's major movie studios a victory in their ongoing battle against copyright piracy.

"This court enjoins plaintiff 321 Studios from manufacturing, distributing, or otherwise trafficking" in the software, Judge Susan Illston of U.S. District Court in San Francisco, wrote in her ruling.

Hope this isn't a repost, I searched a lot of keywords.

321 Studios announces it will appeal the court ruling
ST. LOUIS ? 321 Studios (321) will appeal today?s ruling of the Northern District Court of California?s Judge Susan Illston, and will seek a stay during the appeal process.

?Despite today?s ruling , 321 stands firm in our vow to fight the Hollywood Studios in their effort to take away our customers? digital rights,? said Robert Moore, Founder and President of 321 Studios. ?There is no difference between making a copy of a music CD for personal use and making a backup of a DVD movie for personal use. We are so firm in our belief in the principle of fair use that we will appeal this ruling immediately. And we will take our fight all the way to the Supreme Court, if that?s what it takes to win.?

Judge Illston found 321?s software in violation of section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and enjoined 321 from manufacturing, distributing, or otherwise trafficking in any type of DVD circumvention software as of seven days from today.

The current version of 321?s DVDXCOPY series will be available for sale for the next seven days. If 321 has not succeeded in obtaining a stay by that time, 321 will comply with the court order and replace the current version with product that does not include a ?ripper,? the software code temporarily banned by today?s ruling.

Have to laugh at Hollywood, I wonder what they'll try to do against the freeware that copies DVDs?

There's a thread in P&N

They've threatened to release a universal activation code if they're shut down

Vigorously persue it until it winds up in Russia somewhere, then stop.

Bah. That software sucked anyway. Used it once, the scenes ended up on the wrong disks and in a random order. Did it the GOOD way, and everything came out right.

I don't doubt there are people that are using that software for piracy. However, if I owned a DVD burner, I wouldn't be one of them.

Wow, how stupid can you be? The program is about as easy as the come, and works perfect for what it is. Serious, you'd have to be a monkey to mess up DVDXCopy.

DVDShink would probably be like rocket science to you.

Glad I have my copy. I for one never intended to use it to distribute movies over the internet.

I think if Hollywood continues to price their DVDs reasonably ($14.99 to $15.99 the first week it comes out, then $19.99 for about 6 months to 1 year and then $9.99 afterwards) they shouldn't have to worry about priracy that much.

actually i know a few people that have a DVD burner and dont give out copies of stuff and they do backup there DVD's (well the ones the kids watch all the time anyway).

While i dont have a DVD burner i do have a CD burner. I have yet to make any any copies or download any ISO's that i can burn. But i have made copeis of my cd's that i use in my car. that way if someone steals them im not out the orginals.

Not everyone is a thief.

So because I wouldn't pirate a $15 DVD that would be of higher quality than the copy, have a nice case, artwork, professional label and extras, I'm naive? As waggy said, not everyone is a thief.

That's right and because people drive faster than 55, we should also force manufacturers against making vehicles that go faster than 55.

321 studios sucks. They were selling freeware just a year or so ago and the source of tons of "copy dvd movies without a dvd burner" spam also.
