I dont care if they are not much slower. I'll be putting it on a software Raid 5. Anyone know if these work well in Raid 5 config?

Oh no! I buy a lot of these drives - now I have a boobytrap to watch out for. Damn you Seagate - I dont WANT to have to bring back drives. I have better things to do with my time.

And I dont think the China manuf has anything to do with it - I have gotten a lot of China drives, and never seen a graph like that.

I bought one of these at my local Fry's (Campbell, CA) last week for the same price & it has the AAE firmware...

Mine is an AAE :sun:

Just got mine today and it is an AAE, my sister also ordered a 500gb Maxtor drive and it's also an AAE. Both drives were manufactured in China, so don't automatically assume if your drive isn't from Thailand that it's not an AAE.

If you have already bought one of these drives, would you please post the first number and letter of the serial number and the firmware revision?

EDIT: I thought there might be a correlation between serial numbers and firmware revision numbers based on a sample of ten drives that I opened and examined, but results posted by other people seem to prove that there is no consistency. Thank you for your input.

The unit I got from best buy has a S/N that begins with a 6 but the P/N begins with 9B. It has 3.aae firmware.

The Serial # on both of my drives begin with a 6...

On a side note, even though the Fry's website indicated this was an online sale only, it's not...I got the drive yesterday at the store for $64.99...

This is incorrect for this deal...

I purchased mine at the Portland Frys, but my numbers match up with yours, with the same results...

I thought there might be a correlation between serial numbers and firmware revision numbers based on a sample of ten drives I opened and examined, but based on new evidence, there doesn't seem to be any consistency. Regardless of serial number (and regardless of where the drive was manufactured), the firmware could be AAC, AAE, or AAK. I even found a 7200.9 drive instead of a 7200.10 drive inside a red and white Maxtor box (which I expected to be a Maxtor-branded Seagate 7200.10 drive just like all of the others I had seen).
