320GB Hard Drives Dead? PLZ HELP! :(

I have two DM9+ 160GB on RAID0 on my ABIT NF7-S Sil1113r controller

I just benched with COSBI, then benched sandra, then did a defrag
49% through the defrag, the hard drive stops functioning!!
Now I can't even load windows anymore, it says the hard drive is corrupt. So I load the windowsxp cd, and it gets stuck at "examining drive at device sil1113r at bus 0"
I have 200GB+ of stuff on there!

I just tried putting the drive in the freezer overnight, and now it won't even detect the drives..
How the hell is the freezer trick supposed to work?!

OK I just dried up the drives, and now it works, but it has the same problem as if I have never put it in the freezer.
Is there any utility I can boot from that can fix drive corruption?
I tried to get into the recovery console to run chkdsk, but as I said, it gets stuck at examining drive at bus 0, followed by a BSoD after being stuck there around 40mins to an hour

Someone pointed me to these 2 tools/software:
1. Ultimate boot cd (search on google and you'll see it, filled with a bunch of diagnostic stuff, I believe this is a software you can dl and use for free legally)
2. HDD Regenerator (you have to buy this one, and is meant for bad sectors)

I have not tried either one yet, just passing on the knowledge that was given to me with a harddrive q I had.

OK thanks for the tips, but ultimate boot cd doesn't work. It won't load my controller drivers before starting up!

raid 0 - worse idea for storaging important data.

If 1 drive dies, forget about recoverying since the thing is stripped in between both.

Its hard to say if its a circuit board problem or physical plate problem.. you may have luck swapping boards. Hard to say..

see if you have another drive to boot off from and see if any util can even access the drive.. sounds like its fubar

if you have important data, NEVER RAID 0. you're just asking for trouble

there isnt much you can do when a raid 0 array goes corrupt. Kiss that data good-bye

2. no backup of data
3. playing with wacky benchmarking tools
4. voiding any warranty by making drive-flavored pudding pops

Not sure if the drive is dead though
I had this problem two weeks ago, and windows was able to repair it by chkdsk
Stupid me, was too lazy to backup, now it happened again, but this time I can't get the chkdsk

My drives aren't dead, well at least I don't think they are, just some of the data on the drive has gone corrupt
I just need to run something like chkdsk

I can access the drive a little. For example, it will start booting from windows, then it would take abnormally long, and I would get a BSoD that says the drive is corrupt. So I know there is still life in the drive.

if thats the case, get another hd and use that as ur boot os and run disk diag off that drive.. dont keep using ur drive for now.. the more u use it, the more problem it may cause

OK I just tried that, my nieghbor's PC needs to resetup the RAID on his mobo, which is different than mine. In the RAID setup, it says my drives aren't in RAID and I need to set it up to RAID, but wouldn't it format my drive?

Anyway, have u tried this, get a windows boot disk, and load it up until u get to the prompt, then type 'format \mbr' I think its that slash, anyway that rewrites the master boot record, may fix it.

I just went to reboot console and I used the fixboot and fixmbr commands
still wont boot
partition programs on ultimate boot disk reported a problem on that drive
while seatools tested the drive to be fine
I just moved the seagate 80GB back to the main computer, on a shuttle nforce2, and it works fine

Could my problems lie in my mobo after all this time?
GRR I hate this ABIT NF7-S... fifth time I had problems, I hope I don't have to RMA for it for the 5th time!!!

Sigh. Don't blame RAID0, blame the user. We use RAID0 all over the place here. Rarely if ever have a problem and when we do, it's always PEBKAC. When the problems do crop up, we initialise the logical drives and restore data from backups.

Lesson learned here: NEVER put important data on a RAID0 array! Always ghost your OS and keep important stuff elsewhere. This includes your email information stores if you value that kind of stuff. Invest in a cheap SFF system with a couple of large ATA disks mirrored.

Chances are you have a flakey onboard RAID controller and you revealed this when testing and benchmarking! Unfortunately, you revealed its weakness and hosed your logical drive with all your data on it. Try putting an IDE drive in there and loading an OS on it and install the drivers for your Si RAID and go from there. Ontrack makes a simple program called easy recovery that may be able to get your stuff back.

Man loosing a RAID 0 sucks...I had that happen to me not that long ago...My PSU wasnt supplying enough power and it wouldnt boot and lost the entire 223GB RAID 0 setup...I still havent recoverd all that I have lost I had no back up exept for 2 CD of some inportant files that was out of date ... and a friend of mine just lost his RAID 0 yesterday...Lucky for him we had problems about 3 weeks ago so he had a nice back up of everything on my computer. Now I back up everything on to a Different RAID 0...two RAID drives in one computer If the back up RAID fails no biggie still have the main...if the main fails CRAP then I jsut lost all my games but still have the back up of 95% of my important files.

Two things.

First, make sure the IDE drive you're booting from has enough space for the os (2GB) and recovery (200+ GB?). 250GB disks are available today for under $140 after MIR so this is a cheap way to do this!

Second, install your OS and don't worry about loading the drivers for Si. It won't see the array at first and that isn't important! Just get into your OS FIRST. Then install the drivers through device manager. (windows) It could be hanging because there is another problem but at least having a os fully installed will let you get some verbose information on what is happening.

Once you get past that point, install EZR and let it rip. It will take a long time to scan 200+ GB so be patient!
