This is a DDR card that is not an LE, but an OEM ATI card. Nice buy for $44 as it has a hs/fan...nicer than LE has Hyper Z without the hack. Look for the $44 DDR card.

Is this a better card than the VisionTek GTS-V, which is $4 more?

i've had this card for quite awhile, and it's been decent. dvds and image quality look great, and games play smoothly until you get into much higher resolutions. i just put the visontek gf2 gts-v in my gf's computer (duron 800) recently, and it has slightly higher 3d mark 2001 scores than mine (pIII 850), so it seems a little faster. both cards are a great deal being under $50.

For those who don't know: "Powered by ATI" cards contain ATI GPU chips but are not manufactured by ATI.

Until the Geforce cards improve their visual quality I'm sticking to ATI cards. A few extra frames and a higher benchmark mean nothing to me. This is a very nice card with very sharp visual quality.

Ya I have to second that sentiment. If you want more than just raw fps ATI rules all over Nvidia in the image quality department. I couldn't believe that the image quality is actually a little better on the 8500 compared to the original. Still have the radeon though. It is still very decent video card. Nvidia looks like they are finally starting to work on the image quality issue though with the GF4's but, I don't have a couple hundred lieing around for a video card. You really can't go wrong with the radeon as a solid video card.

The card posted above for $44 + $5 shipping doesn't have TV-Out.

If that's more important than performance you could get the Xpert card for a few dollars less. I believe it has a Rage Theatre chip for TV-Out, and judging from the quality of my Rage Fury VIVO (same chip) it should be outstanding. Divx :) movies actually looked better on a very old 13" composite monitor (C=1084) than they did on either of two 19" Trinitron monitors.

When newegg and tcwo.com were selling Radeon LE's, a number of buyers reported receiving cards that were either full Radeon DDR's or had TV-Out. I wouldn't count on it, but they're all probably about the same price for these resellers, so when they run out of the basic cards they seem to ship ones with more features, sometimes.

OK, per this page, you can either have "Built by ATI" or "Powered by ATI"; the former being ATI retail and the latter being OEM.
http://www.ati.com/support

Newegg has two categories: "ATI" and "ATI OEM - Powered by ATI"

The card in question is in the "ATI" category, yet is labeled OEM, as are practically all the cards in that section.

So would we be able to use ATI's "Built by ATI" drivers for this card, which are more updated, or have to use the "Powered by ATI" drivers, which are older and more generic?

considering this has no tv-out,
i'd still say if 3d performance is what you're looking for stick with gts-v.
i have both gts-v and radeon le (with hyper-z hack as well as v-out)
and if you compare the specs of both in games...
i'd choose gts-v.

if this card came with v-out ... then the story changes. :)
either way, you really can't lose for under 50

No, the 7000 uses the inferior VE chip, while the Radeon 32MB DDR uses the original Radeon core, like the 7200.

Hyper-Z hack: Some features were originally disabled in the Radeon LE's drivers in order to differentiate it from the regular Radeon DDR. Editing the registry would restore them; recently people with LE's have reported that new drivers simply report their card as a 7200 (Radeon DDR), so you may not need to go into the registry after all. Anand goes into this in more detail in his review of the LE.

Here is a comparison of sub $100 ATI and Nvidia offerings. Under $60 the GTS-V appears to be the best performer. It's a decent article, but.. the author gets a couple numbers/details wrong and has made extensive use of copy+pasting, leading me to once again wonder if there are too many hardware review sites out there run for the sake of getting free schwag.

<< So is this just like an underclocked 7500? >>

<< The 7500 uses a different GPU. >>

The original Radeon 32MB DDR (this one, the R100 chip) is clocked at 183/183. Radeon 7500 core (RV200) is clocked at 270/230, but it can also support dual-monitors and TV-Out (thanks to Hydravision), plus it is a .15 micron chip so it runs cooler as well. Everything else should be about the same.
