Apologize for another post, but still need more information.

I'm guessing the difference between Plasma and LCD is one the resolutions of the two (LCD being able to use it possible as another monitor) with a realistic resolution and Plasma with a smaller resolution not as viable but still. Being that its resolution is smaller on the 42" Panasonic Plasma then won't digital cable quality be better since it doesn't have to stretch the picture so much? But I'm still plagued by the widescreen aspect with these tvs.

There are two Panasonic 42" EDTV one is priced 200 or so above the other retail with a better contrast ratio. Does anyone have either one and can vouch for the quality of the picture? And does this type of flat panel tv make sense for just watching digital cable and movies with and maybe hooking it up to the computer for whatever use?

AVSForum.com search will find threads about the 2 plasmas

Widescreen is fine if you don't run screaming in terror from black bars on the sides of a 4:3 picutre.

A 42" widescreen will display 4:3 TV at about the size of a 32" square tube TV.

HD resolution isn't why regular TV looks bad, it looks bad because people use the picture stretch / zoom to hide the  side bars and because on bigger sets (50+ ") the blockiness of lo-resolution regular TV is just more noticeable.

AVS is a great resource for these types of questions, you'll find a ton of user experiences and advice threads oen the Panasonic line.

Thanks for the link, I will use that.

I just read though on their site that Plasma have problems at high altitude, and I am in Colorado Springs 🙁. That leaves Plasmas out and back to LCDs.

I suppose the biggest debate I am having now is about this 4:3 signal and the widescreen of the LCDS. Those of you who own LCDs that are widescreen do you just live with the 4:3 picture or is there something that can be done?

I think on a widescreen display your only real options for 4:3 material are viewing it with the bars on the side or some will give you a "letterbox" option where it will cut off the top and bottom of the 4:3 area and then stretch the rest to fill the screen. This is useful for DVDs that aren't anamorphic and the 16:9 material doesn't fill the whole screen but rather is the middle portion of a 4:3 image centered in your larger 16:9 area.

I don't know if that made sense, but basically it's that you can get the right aspect ratio going but the top and bottom of the image are going to be cut off.
