Just thought I gloat just a little about the UK cellphone market. I walked into a Carphone Warehouse store today and walked out with a TMO PAYG SIM, which was free, which I put £30 on. £20 will go to the 6 month data plan right away and the other £10 is just in case I want to make calls on it(unlikely, this is just for App Inventor, I have two other activated Voice Plans, one company paid).

I cannot believe how cheap that is. Once upon a time data plans were huge £££, and now I'm stumping up £20(~$31) for 6 months!

This makes my fourth activated SIM, they consist of:

1 - BlackBerrry, BES and all data, full worldwide voice and data roaming activated.
2 - Voice only plan for my Car GSM phone system (built in, needs it's own SIM)
3 - 3G Data plan for UMTS Dongle. Worldwide data roaming activated, no data limits.
4 - TMO PAYG SIM, for my G1 to use with App Inventor/laughs.

I was amazed at cell phone service pricing in the UK. When we were there we had unlimited data, 1 hour of calls back to the US, unlimited texts all for 10GBP + 5GBP for the SIM and then 10GBP each month afterwards. Not as good a deal as yours, Divide, but a great deal by US standards. $15/month for 1 hour international, and unlimited texts and internet is well under half what it would cost in the US.

In Ireland, we paid 3 euros for a SIM, and then paid 1 euro for 50MB of data, then some small amount for calls. In three weeks, I used about 10EUR prepaid.

I was telling the guys at Carphone Warehouse what a great system the UK has and they all looked dubious.

I wonder... does the PAYG SIM for your G1 have worldwide data roaming too?

Edit: Ahh shucks, doesn't look like it.

Well, the CPW guys would be dubious as they don't make great amounts on the PAYG sales. They're all about getting you onto plans with new devices. PAYG works for the carrier, devices/plans work for the stores.

IMHO it IS great, if you can get a deal on a decent device. Where PAYG fails is on call prices. It would cost 39c per minute to call a land line on my new TMO SIM, TMO to TMO is only 12c a min, but still not that great.
