About what I paid for mine at BB during a sale.

Great unit, larger than an ipod but I really like the alum outer shell and feet stand-offs. I have been very happy with my unit, and am on my second one now. The first started hanging at the EAX screen and would not go any further even after a reformat and new OS flash.

Everyone that I know personally that has one has been more than happy and mine was the only one that had problems.

It's at walmart for 198.87 Walmarts Link

But at Walmart you're going to pay taxes and you don't get the headphones (or free shipping, but it doesn't count if you're picking it up at the store).
This isn't a thread crap just a heads up to everyone that this price (~200) is about average. So unless you want it know or think the headphones will be a good deal then you probably should wait a little and see if there's a really good deal coming up.

If someone knows where I can get it for ~$150 then I'll be all over it.

This player also gets pretty good reviews just check out amazon. But there have been some problems on a few units with shoddy build quality and there's only a 90 day warranty on it.

These used to be $179 at outpost.com for the longest, longest time. I bought one myself because that deal lasted long enough. Excellent mp3 player, better than iPod IMO. :)

The thing I love about the iPod is their thumb wheel, because it's very intuitive and effective to scroll through a large collection of music. How does this compare to the Thumb wheel?

Well the way the scroll wheel works on the zen xtra is you scroll up and down menus and stuff and press the scroll wheel in to select an item or bring up a menu. Pretty nice, can use it totally one-handedly, whether you're right or left-handed.

I was a die-hard fan of the zen, and for the longest time championed it on messageboards and the like. Then mine died, and all of a sudden I realized that the many complaints regarding this unit wasn't just an overbearing minority, but a very real and significant contingent. This player is at the price point it is because it is made quite cheaply:

1. As one of the posters above mentioned - the OS hangs, and the drive dies. I have no idea whether its due to a poor and overintensive write/read seeking OS, but this isn't a fluke.

2. Very, very often the stereo audio dies, leaving mono output. This is a result of a truly sh1tty-quality stereo plug used on the device. Do a search on the net to get insight into how frequent this has happened. I had to exchange 2 zens for this reason.

3. As much as I HATE to admit it, there is no better mp3 player on the net, or I should clarify, there WAS no better mp3 player on the net when I went for the ipod 1 year ago (after the fiasco with the Zen). Hopefully, HOPEFULLY there is now, since the pricetag for the iPod is ridiculous like most of apples stuff. And unlike most people, I try to HIDE the fact that I have an iPod for fear of someone thinking I"m another zombie who buys electronics for their aesthetic and not their quality. Why? because Apple lucked out this time folks. NO, not everything apple makes is leagues above the competion - in fact, I believe most is on par or below, with an exorbitant price tag.

I also did have problems with the audio jack, but they took it off the market for a little while to fix it. It was easy for me to fix the problem anyway because it just took some simple resoldering.

As rockyct just mentioned, the headphone jack problem has been fixed. Mine is about a month old and I am loving it so far. So DigDug, you championed it because the problems people were having with it were in the minority (definately a fact), but when you were unfortunate enough to have problems you suddenly deduced that the majority of owners were having problems? The dissatisfied will always be the more vocal group.

Lets not forget that you can also store data on it as well as music mp3 and wma files :)

I have transfered pics from my computer to it and brought it to a friends house and gave the pics to him so that in itself to use it as an external 30 gig storage device makes it better then a ipod imo of course :)
I also like the way it sounds.

And because I need money I would consider selling it for $175 Shipped if anyone cared.
