I was thinking of getting a web cam as some of my friends already have them.
So we could do Online chats, phone calls while seeing each other.

Now I dont know a darn thing about web cams.
All I know is all of the ones Ive seen being used arent exactly impressive, more like a really bad slideshow with lots of frames missing.

Is it more important which Web Cam you buy to get smooth video?

Or does your internet connection speed determine whether my friends will see smooth video playback?

Heck is it even possible for my friends to see me at a smooth 30fps or hasnt the technology gotten that good yet?

I dont wanna spend all kinds of money on a high end web cam just to find out that its no better than a $50.00 one.

The most important thing is the color quality and sensitivity to light. Also, software support is good. The higher end 3com or kodak cams get my vote.

As for actual videoconferencing, it really does depend on how clean your two connections are. If either are on dialup, then forget it. But even broadband can slow down during peak hours with bad providers.
