I know my cpu might suck, but I thought Id do better than 30fps with

Xp 2100 1.79ghz
512mb Ram
X850 Pro..

If I went to a barton 2500+ would there be a noticable change in FPS

This can be a problem. Honestly, it "seems" that your card is choking due the ineffeciency of the power supply. Having a good quality PSU overall is important for your system, I heard stories of a crappy PSU went up in flames and destroying a whole system. My recommendation is to search a decent PSU (Antec, Allied, Enermax, etc) with at least 12 V+ pumping out 18 amps.

Come on now

The PSU could do it, and only 512 MB RAM could as well. Its christmas season...meaning newegg is putting 1 GB matched pairs on sale....CHEAP. Go look up their PQI CL2.5 stuff...on sale for 70 last I saw.

The proc seems a little slow for this too.

PSU COULD be the reason, but I wouldn't say that's primary cause.

I could agree, I never said it was the primary reason. But an upgrade is essential to power up the monster cards these days.

More ram will help any skiping that you get from swapping, but if you don't get studdering then ram is not the issue. I doubt it is the PSU either, my money is on the CPU as even my old Barton at 2.2ghz struggled a bit in CS:S.

ur bottleneck is the cpu.. no doubt about it. When I switched over to a64 running on a 9700 pro it increased my fps on css dramtically. I would say atleast 10-15fps on average compared to my athlon xp oc at 2.2ghz.

It seems odd...even on my bro's P4 3.0 GHz Northwood, 1 GB RAM, 6800 Ultra, I get an average of 70 FPS....on my A64 FX-53, 2 GB RAM, 7800GT OC'ed, I rarely hit below 100 (my avg is prob around 150) FPS.

I would seriously turn down the resolution if I were you, and dump the Athlon XP as soon as you can. Way too old....the cheapest A64 will outdo it anyday.

Yes, the PSU is very important..PNY blamed my PSU for my 6800U acting up when I still had in in my FX-53 system...I will never go below 500W again (ok, maybe 480 of a very good brand) If buying a new PSU, stick to well known names: sparkle, Antec, enermax, PC power&cooling etc.

Memory will help with choppyness where the textures and such overflow into the page file....I know that all too well from my BF2 gameplay...2GB of RAM really made a BIG difference...when I only had 1 GB, I had 2 megs free while BF2 was running.

My Friend had the same problem he upgraded to an Athlon64 and now gets 40-70FPS in
CS-source with a GeforceTi4200 and Athlon 3200+ 1GB DDR400 ram.

I dont think its the cpu. I'm sure its contributing to the problem though. I played source with my xp2500@2.1 , 768mb ram, and 6800nu at 1280x1024 with everything maxed except 2xaa 4xaf and got 50-80fps.
