300watt PS enough to power this system..??

hi,
i will be building my first computer system this christmas..i've got all my parts down except the case/psu..main specs are the following:
EPOX EP-8KHA+
AMD athlon XP 1600 retail(not planning to overclock)
2x256 MB DDR(crucial)
MSI geforce 2 ti retail
turtle beach santa cruz
pioneer DVD-106S 16X DVD-ROM
yamaha 20x10x40x CDRW
seagate barracuda IV 80GB 7200RPM
*planning to put in a kenwood true 52x or 72x CD-ROM in the near future also

so do you anandtechers think 300watt is enough or should i go with 350watts..?? also, please do recommend a case/psu with a link..thanks in advance..

My machine is fairly close in specs (except for DDR & Athly XP), but I've 2 7200rpm drives and an UltraPlex 40 on top. It's running rock solid on an Antec 300W PSU. Make sure you get a brand name PSU like Antec or Enermax, as a 250W quality PSU will easily outperform generic >350W PSUs.

well - i can't answer the question on whether 300w is enough, but if it is here is a very tight looking case for around $96 shipped from Antec.

I highly recommend spending an extra $13 and get the Enlight case with 340W...

I personally feel that a system with 1.3GHz or higher should have more than 300W, especially with the number of peripherals you intend to put in.

The other thing to note, Kenwood has been out of the CD-ROM business for quite some time, and the Kenwood 72x drives are pretty hard to find. Buying it used seems to be the only option nowadays. Also, if you can, get the Yamaha 24x instead of the 20x.

Yes 300W will do just fine. I have a similiar system also, with a more power-hungry original Tbird 1.33 and an extra 40gb hard drive, all powered by an Enermax 300W.

Check AMD's approved power supply list that can be found on their website.

Some 300 watt supplies are not recommended for that chip, including the 300 watt Antec. Athlon XP's are not as power hungry as the original Thunderbird Athlon's but they still suck a lot of juice. I would suggest getting a proper power supply. I believe that a lot of the threads on this forum on others where people are having trouble with AMD based systems are because they are using inadequate power supplies.
