300W enough?

I'm upgrading soon to an Athlon 1800+ and GeForce3 Ti500. Is my Antec 300W PS enough? I also have 2 hard drives, a cd-rom, cd-rw, and 4 case fans.

you know I am trying to figure out what the problem with my system is. I got a 300W and a 1.4Ghz Amd.. and yet it wont boot past teh first install. I mean I can install teh OS, but on first boot for windows it crashes.. no matter what OS.

I am getting pissed off.. tommorow the motherboard and CPU goes back and I am getting a new one.

What brand of power supply? My antec is able to feeb my overclock athlon 1.4 just fine. I think a 1800+ will use slightly less or about the same amount of power has my athlon 1.4. But it can depend on the power supply quality. I am running an antex 300 watt power supply. not sure which model it is.

I think it should be able to handle it. If you can't boot or suffer from stability problems then try a better PSU.

won't you ever gonna stop this PSU hype!?

on generic 250W (yes 250w) I run the following:

athlon 1.4 tbird
256 ddr ram
kt266a gigabyte mobo

dvd rom 12x40 hitachi
cdrw liteon 12x

geforce 3

Digital video broadcasting card!

live! soundblaster

ethernet card

hdd20 GB ata 133 Quantum
hdd30 GB ata 100 IBM 75x

3 Case fans 80 mm

I run it 3 months already, downloading files from the satellite and watching digital TV
and all that on 250W! no stability issues or BSODs

I'd up the power supply to a 350/400W just to be on the safe side. I had almost the same setup as you, except for a Thunderbird 900 and Radeon 64MB DDR and had my 300W PS die on me.

Thanks for the replies. Since opinions vary I'll stick with my Antec 300W for now and upgrade only if I have problems. Funny thing is that when I bought my current Athlon 1.2 GHz, this PS model was listed "recommended" on AMD's site. Now the only Antec on their list is the 400W version, for the Athlon 1.2 GHz all the way up to XP 2000+.

I hope you can stand the noise 🙂
I don't even want to imagine the noise level of a 350W or 430W PSU 🙂

I had once globalwin WBK 38...not again thank you 🙂

300W is more than enough, I use 320 just because thats what I get really cheap, but the 300W I was using before was more than fine. Don't listen to these people thinking you need to spend a lot on psu's. AMD's recommendation is based on maximum power usage and the fact that a 300W psu might not give out 300W, a good 300 is more than enough, even for fast cpus.
