Hi all, my first post @Anandtech!

I was planning to get a cheap 40"LCD for home this xmas until this idea came to me: since I don't have much space in the room why not upgrade my PC monitor to a 30" and use it also as an HTPC monitor?

I'm also looking for a good price/quality set of PC speakers for the same purpose, would Logitech X-340 do good for a very small room?

Thanks in advance!

Dumb question - does your videocard have dual-link DVI on it?

Is the PC going to be the only source? I think the 3007 only has a DVI input, right?

For computer use in a small room, I'd be tempted to get a 30" monitor with 2560x1600 res vs. a 1920x1080 screen that's larger. I guess it depends on how far away you're going to be? That's probably also quite a price difference considering how cheap LCD TVs have gotten.

As for the speakers, yeah, that would work... but part of me hopes that you'd spend a bit more on the sound considering the video budget.
Are the x-340s now? I know there's z-340s and x-540s, but x-340 doesn't sound familiar.

Hey thanks for the warm welcome and quick response!
I definitely didn't give much details and made a mistake on the speakers, on your questions:

GTX260 core 216 with dual/link DVI, yes :)
PC is the only source, so the limited conectivity of 3007wfp ain't an issue.
I'm not gonna be farther than 2m from the monitor so I guess 30" is large enough as a tv, did I mention I game on that PC? ;)
On speakers, my bad, it´s the x-540 set, I like the idea of wireless remote for TV mode. Later I could hook an IR remote for media player too (gotta research on that subject).

I´m the kind of guy who prefers small/good quality screen over big/crappy image. Same for audio, I know even a few RMS are enough for this room, but I like clean sound while gaming or watching a movie.

Thanks again for the help!

This can sometimes be a useful tool, not sure if it would really help in this case, but you can get an idea about relative size and pixel density, etc.

I think based on what you're saying, a 3007 makes sense. The things a 40" LCD would have going for it are price and a bigger screen. The bigger screen is only helpful if you're sitting farther away from it of course. If you're 6 feet or closer, that shouldn't really matter since you can get as close as you want to the 30" and it should still look good.

EDIT: Oh, and you might want to get some additional opinions on this. I've been wanting to get one of the 30" dell monitors for a while now since I learned that I could match them up well with my two 20" Dell 2007FPs if I put them in portrait mode.

I do think that the 30" Dell would be very nice for gaming and general computer usage. I haven't tried using a ~40" TV as a computer monitor before, so I don't really know what it's like. You would certainly get a LOT more resolution with the 30" monitor.

I've decided for the 3007, was tempted for a cheap 40" TV but I'm sure colour accuracy won't be anything near the IPS panel :)

Next step after the box comes home is to calibrate it, I've used one at work and it has a nasty peak on magentas.

btw, nice upgrade on the site! I guess I just came in the right time :)

cheers.

I have the 3007wfp in my other room in my apt. I also use my Pioneer 50" Kuro as a monitor when I play quakelive using my htpc (ubuntu). Needless to say, the Kuro can only show 1366x768 while the dell can do 2560x1920. Both are excellent screens but of course the Kuro was made to be a tv and monitor second.
