Will I see any difference going from 3000+ (Winchester) to Opti 144 or even 146. I need a new processor badly even tho i want a dual core, i dont want to spend the extra money knowing I'll be upgrading again soon.

EDIT: I see 4000+ price went back down again, so Im thinkin about getting that. I do alot of decoding and encoding on my box.

144 = 3000+
146 = 3200+
You might notice if you overclock but you wont get much more speed than what you could already get right now by overclocking your 3000+. I would say that you are fine with what you have.

alot of decoding and encoding will need dual core cpu like core 2 duo or X2 or Opteron

I'd get an x2 3800+, overclock it to 2.4 ghz or so, and you'll be happier. The 4000+ has more raw speed, but obviously, no dual core.

Dual core will at least last a little longer...

depends on your planned usage and budget.

I am thinking of picking up a 4000 or opti around $100...just a chip replacement.

I have a 3200+ running at 3800+ speeds.

First thing I am doing though is going 1gb to 2gb in memory.

I usually do single tasks when I am pushing my CPU....I multitask mostly light weight stuff like email/browsing...occasionally open up a text editor for some coding changes.

WoW is about the most overall intensive thing I do other than backup my CD's to MP3 and DVD's about 1st a month or whenever I buy one. This tasks I usually run while I am watching tv or out shopping.

if u oc then the 4000 will be a nice bump... mine clocks to 3.0... it's much punchier than my 3000 at 2.2... my opty 146 only goes to 2.8, and even the bump to 3.0 made a noticeable difference on my kids pc with the 8800 in it (those things really can suck a cpu dry...)...

i am at the point now that i wish i had just bit the bullet and built a new c2d box... it's costing me more than i planned to move parts around...

there was a 4600 x2 for $200 (at ne, i think), too...

I wish my parents would also buy me an 8800.

Im in the same situation.. my budget is $100 also. I think I am going to get a new cpu and just stick with the 512MB of Ram. I can do without a GB or 2 for until the summer. Then Ill most likely upgrade my system from 939. I would love to get a dual core but its just not in my budget
