3000+ @ 2.4 gHz?

Hey guys! I'm pretty new here, and I got my comp coming in the mail in a couple of days (well, most of it). Here is what I got:

Athlon 3000+
Abit N7-S Rev 2.0
(2 x 512) Corsair 3200 RAM
Hercules 9800 Pro
500W PSU

Anyways, you guys think I can fairly easily get it up to 2.4 gHz (12 x 200mHz)? I am a n00b at O/Cing and dont want to accidentally blow something up. My case will have 3 intake and 3 exhaust fans, and I'll probably buy an SK7 heatsink as well. Let me know what yall think, I'm just pushing for this number cause it seems fast but safe enough, and the 200mHz should run good in sync with my RAM and mobo (as long as I'm learning all this right). Thanks

It shouldn't be too hard to hit 2.4 with good air cooling and a voltage bump. Nothing is going to blow up, don't worry about that. For cooling I'd recommend getting a Thermalright SLK-800a or SLK-900 coupled with a decent fan (40CFM or over recommended)... it's pretty hard to mess up when you have mounting hardware.

Thanks! Yeah I might get that 800a instead, it's a little more expensive but is probably worth it. I'll probably just put a 32 CFM fan on it though cause I already have one and dont really want to buy another... unless that probably wont be good enough. Oh one more question am I going to have to bridge anything on it or will my mobo unlock everything I need to change all this?

2.4 Ghz with any Barton is pretty optimistic. Don't expect to be running less than 1.850 volts to get it that high... and chances are it may not be stable even if you do get it to boot into Windows. What I normally do is run Prime 95 for an hour... if I don't get errors, then I loop 3DMark while running Prime95 in the background to make sure CPU usage stays at 100%. That'll also put a strain on the video card and RAM which might bring some instabilities to the surface that you wouldn't normally find.

Yeah I figured it'd maybe be over optimistic, I had just never seen much overclocking done to a 3000+. I dunno if I wanna go that high on the voltage, maybe I'll just stop at 2.3 (11.5 x 200), I live in Texas and it gets awfully hot, not sure if all my case fans plus heatsink would keep it down enough that with that high voltage.

Well, he said he already got the XP3000... so not much he can do about that.

But... Gigem, be aware, just because the processor comes from AMD with a higher model number, doesn't mean you can get an almost guaranteed 366 Mhz extra like the XP2500. 2.2 Ghz seems to be the cutoff point... beyond that, you need to raise the voltage A LOT to get it to run at a higher speed stably.

hey gigem

don't plan on going past 2.3 with voltages lower than 1.85....

and don't plan on going past 2.35 without voltages of at LEAST 1.975V.

mines at 1.975v and i cannot go any faster what so ever....my computer gives me the finger if i try. :\

my cooling is slk-800 by thermalright and a tornado fan. 80mm one.

if i was you i'd get the 2500

Yeah I screwed up, cause I ordered before I thought I wanted to O/C any, then changed my mind. I guess it's 2.3 for me then, but thats still real good. Thanks for the help :)

You can definetely do it. I just got my 2500 and I overclocked it to 2.22ghz. I couldn't get it to run 200 cpu frequency=400fsb because of my ram. So I upped the multiplier from 11 to 12 and lowered my cpu frequency to 185 and it runs stable no problems. And I don't have that great of ram either. Crucial 512mb pc2700. I should be able to reach 2.5ghz or maybe alittle higher when I get my stick of corsair 512mb xms 3200LL later down the road. Hey good luck with it. If you need any help on overclocking post in the overclocking section and you'll get plenty of help. Good Luck!

Forgot to mention. Your going to be running corsair xms 3200, so there is no doubt in my mind that you can't go higher than 2.4!!! Good Luck!
