I'm using a generic 300 watt psu in an hp computer with a 4890. so far so good, haven't really done anything that gives any graphics load. but i've tried bitcoin mining recently, and it's fine. nothing really happened. it's slightly underclocked and undervolted. is this fine for a 4890? will it damage the 4890 if im using a generic 300 watt power supply with it?

I doubt a generic 300W PSU could handle the 4890 in the long run, especially if you're actually gaming on it. I had a 4890, and they're quite power hungry.

Cheapy PSUs that blow could potentially damage/destroy your connected hardware, so I would look into getting a good quality 500W PSU or just replace the 4890 with something less power-hungry.

Yeah, if it handled it at all, you'd be pushing it to the max on a regular basis.

wow what you are doing is not the least bit smart and you are just asking for trouble. those cheap oem psus do not even make their rated wattage in real world conditions. depending on what the rest of the system looks like its just a matter of time before the power supply goes and you risk damaging other components. at the very least you have already put that psu under more stress than it was ever intended to handle.
