I've got quite a few giveaway of shareware video converters, like WinX Adoreshare Wondershare etc. But de facto, I usually use WinX (V5.5.3 got from GAOTD in Jan) and freeware Handbrake to deal with my daily converting job. I just came across official giveaway the latest version WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe, so I updated V5.5.3 to V5.6.0 that supports downloading online videos from 300+ mainstream video portals. Now I decide to keep only WinX and Hanbrake in my software arsenal.

If you' re using this program, you're entitled to get the latest version for free without any strings attached.
The giveaway runs till May, 28. >>http://www.winxdvd.com/giveaway/convert-video-free.htm

Sure some guys may look for a versatile shareware for SD/HD video converting/editing, photo slideshow making... you're welcome to give it a shot without a penny. The only catch is giveaway version don't support any future upgrade. However, you still can upgrade it in their next round of giveaway like me :sneaky:

OS: Windows 98, NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista (32 & 64 bit), Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit), Windows 8 (32 & 64 bit). Will support Windows 10 once it's available.

You do not get a zip file, you get an executable. Something looking rather shady here...

I get a zip file named winx-hd-video-converter-deluxe-cvf.zip .

Are you clicking "Get it free"?

The contents are an .exe file and .txt file. I uploaded the .exe to virustotal and it came up clean. https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/...93414f1f2c7fd191fd0c0fad/analysis/1432221739/

I also scanned it with emsisoft, malwarebytes and hitmanpro and it was clean. Of course that doesn't mean much if it calls out.

Doesn't malwarebytes blocks callouts? or maybe add a firewall rule?

most people are paranoid. anything even remotely legitimate won't give problems unless it's a huge software vendor like sony. they need to stop visiting shady pr0n sites

I've had one of these "YouTube Downloader" apps turn around and install an update that proceeded to take over my web searches and install other shady crap.

Luckily, I have some things locked down and a hosts file (thanks, mvps) to block out a lot of crap. I'm also acutely aware when things don't look or work right on my system. It wasn't too bad to clean out, but those damn "MyWeb" hostile search takeovers tend to lead to a lot more malware getting installed.

It's natural to be a bit distrustful of "free" software. I'd guess at least a third of the stuff I'm offered by BitsDeJour and sites like that are hiding something far worse under the covers. I tend to stick to places like PortableApps.com for most of my useful utilities.

That said, this looks decent for what it is.

I was using malwarebytes free but I don't think the paid version blocks internet connections. For that you would need a firewall or internet security suite. I have no idea if this program needs to call home to register the key.

IMO, anything remotely legitimate being sold for a pricetag is lawsuit material with malware and search installation / takeover

Everytime I think its java or some such gets an update part of the process is to uncheck the box installing ASK as my browser search.

Read before clicking.

Does this have a better interface than Super? It would convert the files but was a pain to use.

Oh, I always read and uncheck/check boxes as appropriate.

This was some "Free" software deal that didn't ask specifically, and no option existed to turn off updates.

With that sort of app... you can't even disable access to the internet, since that's the whole purpose of the app. Worse, it didn't even do that job well, so I had forgotten about it and didn't uninstall it right away, which was my key mistake.

I have to re-iterate, the app in question was NOT the one in the OP, but something else entirely... just a cautionary tale related to other users' concerns here. WinX HD seems like it should be just fine.

I couldn't get anything but YouTube to work, but it did work, creating a nice quality 1080p mp4 out of a video I tried.

The Winx Youtube Downloader, however, worked great for vimeo on a test, and is completely free, not even any shady side-loads going on. Nice.
