$300 now or $350 over time?

I've built a new SFF computer for myself:

C2D 6750
2gig Patriot DDR2 800 Ram
Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2

and I'm putting all that in an Apevia SFF case with a 500W power supply

The problem is that I've not ordered a new video card yet, and since I'm upgrading from an AGP machine, just sticking with an old card isn't an option.

On one hand, I know an 8800gts will last me for a good while. I take a price hit now, but spread over time is a great deal.

On the other hand, there are several last generation options at about $100 that will do fine now and give me a buffer to spend around $250 (my preferred max price point for video cards) when the next batch of ati and nvidia cards come around:
X1900GT
X1950GT
X1950Pro

I just can't make up my mind, though I am leaning toward the smaller purchase now, simply due to having just spent so much on the system itself.

And if anyone has a preference between those three ~$100 cards, I'd love to know, especially if you know whether they fit easily in SFF cases (they all seem rather long).

Prices won't come down fast enough for your 2 card option to make much sense, imo. I would go with a very good card right now and enjoy it for a few years, upgrading when very good DX10 cards are out and reaching the midrange price.

I just purchased that x1900GT for $100 shipped and a 2140 for $75 shipped. I'm upgrading from a Athlon 64 3400+ with an 9800 Pro, so I'm expecting a huge boost. For me, it didn't make sense to spend 200+ on a video card right now. I currently have a 20" monitor and feel this will do me fine for about a year, when I plan to upgrade to a 24" 1920x1200 monitor. Because I don't feel that any card within an acceptable price range does 1920x1200 very well right now, this made a lot of sense to me.
