$300 Lian Li PC-V1100 Case

Lucky, me. My wife hears about all the Doom3/HL 2 hoopla and tells me I can finally build the dream gaming rig I've always wanted. First on my list of goodies is a really nice case. I've always wanted a sweet case that I could build on and upgrade down the road. Now that time is here and I'm wondering if shelling out $300 for an ATX case and power supply isn't a bit foolish considering that BTX might be right around the corner? Will new motherboard designs exist in ATX format 1 or 2 years from now. I need a crystal ball!

If you're worried about having to buy a new case for BTX mobos (whenever those come out), you could always get a $160 Cooler Master CM Stacker. It accepts ATX and BTX (through a conversion process). ATX PSU's are supposed to work with BTX as well, but nobody's certain.

Its really hard to tell when BTX will take off if it does. The market is very cautious in this arena, and it seems to be an Intel related move. AMD may not even consider a BTX move. As above poster said, if you want bTX, CM Stacker is cool, but its like 50 pounds.

Personally, Im not really digging BTX, so I would probably shift for a "normal" case. 300$ for that LianLi case and a quality 480W PSU (Noisetaker Enermax, and Antec TruePower come to mind) is about normal as expense.

BTW, how did you get your wife to cut the leash? 😛

Tiamat, my wife gave me this opportunity almost 2 years ago but I didn't jump on it then. Instead, I bought a shuttle with an Nforce 2 chipset and integrated graphics/sound and called it "her" computer. 🙂 She loved its understated style and small size (small enough to sit on her desk instead of under it) and proudly showed it off to her friends. It was a smart move on my part because my wife (an accountant) needed a new computer to run Xcel and Tax software. As for myself, I realized it was better to wait....the time was not right for the ultimate game machine. It's all about patience with the wives ;-)

btw, the V1100 is my choice because it's (theoretically) quiet AND runs cool. No CM Stacker for me.

The V1100 is a sweet case, but $300 is a bit too much in my book. If I were me (and I am) I'd get somthing like this Lian Li (and I did) or this Silverstone. That way if BTX dose catch on you won't be stuck with a $300 ATX case and you'll be able to drop $150+ on a new BTX case should the need arise.

Also the Lian Li above is pretty quiet stock and you can take it as far as you want by swapping out the fans with Panaflows, Papst, AcoustiFan, ect. My Lian Li is nearly dead silent under normal use and runs plenty cool.

i just bought the V1100b (the black version) and i love it. yes, it cost $250 but it was exactally what i wanted, and i had just gotten an unexpected 'safety award' from work that i felt like spending.

the only problem is the firewire cable from the front is too short to be plugged in on my msi k8n neo. this is really a nonissue, because i don't have any use for firewire. other than that tiny detail, it works perfectly. its quiet, runs just as cool as any other case i've owned, and i really like the new layout. if you feel you can spend the $$, do it.

Operandi - The Lian-Li 6070 is truly a sweet deal for $150 but I'm concerned about it's ability to keep cool - I'd like to do some modest overclocking of cpu, memory, and video. Has anyone had success overclocking with this case? So far Anand's review is the only one I've seen where heat dissipation was tested.
Phray - the V1100B seems to be exactly what I want too. Which power supply did you go with....details please!

It keeps cool just fine, and my panaflows are running sub 1500 RPM (most of the time) while running fairly hot components. Besides "modest" overclocking will have a negligible impact on heat output and it definitely won't have an effect on stability, heat shouldn't be a problem until you start pushing your overclocks hard.

As far as power supplies; Tagan, Seasonic, and Forton are the prolly the best you can get.

The CM Stacker is both of these - what makes you think it isn't?

The only two things that strike against the stacker is the size (if you count that as a negative), and the weight (depends how important it is to you).

Btw, I now own a CM Stacker and love it...

i went with the Antec 'True550W' which is very nice. i previously had a cheapo 400w in my last rig and it didn't supply enough power for my 6800gt when everything else was plugged in. so to use my video card in that box, i had to unplug one my CDR and my cold cathode. but im happy to say, I don't have power problems anymore... 😀

i always thought the v1000 looked way too much like a huge cheese grater.
😉

I can't imagine spending that much on a case. My $40 Chieftec midtower should serve me well for a while still.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Degrador - the CM Stacker is interesting but over-kill for my needs. I'm going to stick with the Lian Li V-1100B and a 480 watt Tagan (thanks Operandi) power supply. The case is now $230 on New Egg which makes it only $80 more than the more conventional layout of the PC6070. I have a feeling this new layout is going to be a big hit for Lian-Li.

Sounds solid jwix.. should be a sweet system.

My v1100 arrived today and I am very happy with it (for me) it was worth the extra money because it was just what I wanted. All I need now is the bits to go inside 🙂
BTW I really want to know if the AeroPower II+SE 550W PSU will fit inside but no-one seems to have seen one. Anyone help?

I picked up a V1100b about 2 months ago and it's a great case. Only pain in the ass is the cable routing between compartments... the computer i put in it has 5 HDD and a 550W enermax PSU, which has a lot of cabling and the cabling is thick. It WORKS, but was very hard to get routed neatly, and i dread the thought of having to deal with taking it out. But yes it is very quiet (unless I have the H1a Panaflo in teh back flipped into high speed) and works very well. The other case I use is a PC-6077 which is what the stacker is supposed to clone, and I am very happy with it as well. Both designs are great... i'd imagine the stacker/6077 is easier to work with though if you switch out components often.

I would say its not really worth it. You can get an all around great case for 150ish or less. Lian Li is great and so is the Wavemaster. You can put an extra 150 into stuff that actually does something besides look pretty that way.
