300% increase?

My computer overclocked itself. That's about the only way I can put it. I bought my computer a couple years ago. It is a Compaq 8000z Athlon XP 1500+. About a year after I got it, I noticed that the speed listed on the My computer/ properties page was now 1700+ A few months later it changed to 1900+ I made no attempt whatsover to overclock it. I don't remember exactly when it changed, but I've probably reformatted this thing 9 or more times.

Recently, it's been acting even weirder...

When I first start my computer today, this is what CPU-Z reads...

I ran UT and it played well, with normal speeds.

But I dailed up and now this is what CPU-Z reads.

I load up UT and it goes slow. Everything is in slow motion. I start up MOH, it goes just as slow and it says that I'm getting 200+ fps!

Amd Athlon XP 1500+
Compaq 07BCh mobo
Chipset: AMD 761
Southbridge: VIA VT82C686
384 MB of RAM 2.5 3 3 6 9 8 DDR-SDRAM PC 2100
Geforce 2 mx 400 64 mb
30 gb HD
Supramax 56i modem

Windows XP All updates

I hope you guys have some ideas. Because I'm confused.


P.S. While I was writing this the mhz went up to 5000, wait... now it's back down to 3000mhz... geez.

Do you think my system clock could be broke? If it were really running at those speeds, my chip would have been on fire a year ago.

edit: I've been trying to fix this for a long time and nothing seems to work. The compaq tech support told me to flash the bios... didn't work. I went to a different forum a while ago and they accused me of lying.

MoH, UT, and Splinter Cell are all affected by the slow down/ridiculous fps, but Wolfenstein: ET runs just fine.

I doubt it is truly running at that speed. 3 Ghz Athlon on .18u is probably just about impossible with only 2 volts. Don't get me wrong 2 volts is alot but not enough to get that chip to 3Ghz lol.
I donno what to tell u though.

i think your cpu/mobo just went to crap; if its still under warranty (doubt it) get it replaced, otherwise get your cpu tested.

It could be a temp issue..have you checked? Don't get overly worried it it's not a heat issue..you may be getting bad data for some reason.

It's a cheapo compaq mobo, no way to check the temp. But I think that heat is a problem, or side effect. If I play games for a long time they usually crash. Wolfenstein can last for about 45 minutes, and UT2003 crashes in about 15 minutes.

Edit: I think I have an idea for fixing it. Go to newegg and get myself a new computer.

Have you used compressed air to dust the system out? If you haven't then it's probably packed with dust and that is causing heat problems. You can also remove the CPU cooler and clean it off and apply new thermal compound.

i have this exact problem with my parents old hp athlon xp, it jumps from 900mhz to 1.2ghz to 700mhz and all around the place when im checking in cpu-z, i have no idea what the problem is but compaq and hp used to operate together i know that much :laugh:

Id blame the motherboard. If you can get access to a spare, try and get one and load ur components into that to make sure its the mobo. Id say im 80% sure that is the problem. If not, buy a new one for like 40 bucks off of newegg and call it a day.

3GHZ is the maximum internal clock for barton processors, so there is no way that 1500+ pallimino core could have made it anywhere near.

Dont worry about the problem, my moms laptop does the same thing in CPU-Z. Shes running a duron, I guess it uses AMD's clock throttling crap, but CPU-Z is probably wrong. 2V would have fried your M/B in a year, and 780 FSB is impossible.

There isn't one. It depends on the processor. Compare a CPU to a GPU and CPU's run at considerably higher clock speeds than GPU's manufactured on the same process.
