Will these two video cards ever get this cheap ? Like when the next generation nvidia video cards come out or do they never go down that much ?

I believe they'll have to. If the 8800GT is already approaching GTX speed that is. My opinion is that 90nm G80 stock is almost over. They may not even be producing any more 90nm G80s and do not care if the price on those parts plummet. Everything will be 65nm G9x based parts now. I'll most likely snap up a cheap 90nm 640GTS when the time is right.

Then again, if stock will be low, the price might not budge. may even go up.

That's what I predicted (MHO) several weeks ago. My money is on ^^that's what will happen.

Today, if there was a $300 8800GTX and a $500 faster 65nm XXXXGTX, I'd snap up the old one in a second!

I'm watching all the big etailers just like you guys are. :)

Past history is that the MSRP prices won't drop substantially, but they'll
just discontinue manufacturing of the 'obsolete' model in favor of the
next series of models.

Generally speaking the card manufacturers and big retail / distribution
channel partners will have had significant (many months) advance notice that the
older models would be discontinued and obsoleted by newer / better products.

Therefore the amounts of 'stock' inventory of the old parts in the distribution
chain would probably have been strategically cut way down prior to the
availability of the new models and public discontinuance of the old ones.

There might be a *brief* period of time you could see low 'clearance prices'
applied to older model high end cards, but mostly what you'll see is *slight*
discounts followed by the items going permanently out of stock at the big
retailers.

I wouldn't expect to see a sustained wave of a stable "much lower" price for
previous high end cards, though if you look around you'll probably see the occasional
and short-lived "hot deal" on a hand-full of clearance units.

Look what were the X1900XTXs selling for before and after they were
discontinued. Same for 7950GX2.

The 8800GTS-320 is already discontinued; have the prices for it dropped a lot?
Not really; mostly people "in the know" just wouldn't even consider buying one
when they know they can get a better 8800GT model for a similar or better
price in the near future. The people who don't know the difference will just
keep buying them for a good while not knowing that they ought to be
looking for a 30% lower price.

I was mostly talking about buying used. A 640GTS priced higher than a 8800GT, won't sell very well to the knowledgeable. Anyone tries to cut one loose in FS/FT, I'm on it.

At least OP you can put question mark at the end of title...

As for question, I remember buying 6800Ultra for $400 when it was $500 elsewhere and then week later, they all were gone. Nvidia knows how to play it smart so they don't have much leftover of high-end parts.

i think nvidia has a much tighter leash on it's partners than AMD does
... i think i stand a much better chance of getting a new cheap 2900xt then a brand new 8800-640GTS for ~$200 :p

but used ... prices should drop thru the floor ... unless i sell my 2900xt *now*, there won't be much to get ... so i will do what i had originally planned - get a 2nd 2900xt for X-fire

Agreed - it currently looks like a HotDeals thread. Needs question mark or subtitle to clarify.

As soon as the 8800 GTX hits 300-350 level I'm buying another to use in SLI. Hopefully when newer things start coming out they'll start dropping the prices a bit.
