300+ gb external hard drives

is it just me? or do most people notice that ALL drive manufacturers are having a really tough time getting reliable external hard drives that are 300 gb and over? i'm going off to college at case western this coming fall, and i'm going to be purchasing an IBM T42 2378RSU system with an external hard drive.

i'm leaning the most towards the seagate 400 gb external, but for some odd reason, all online reviews for that specific model have been negative. has anyone on this forum experienced/heard of the problems that seagate is plagued with? and of course, from other manufacturers.

i understand that most people who do reviews online for specific products usually do it because something messed up for them, but there usually is a good review for some product, for some odd reason though, no hard drives over 300 gb are really getting consistently good reviews. or am i just missing the good reviews?

anyway, i guess my question to the users would be, what hard drive should i get that's preferably 300 gb+ in capacity?

i haven't a clue what your talking about.

i have 2 terabytes worth of data on massive hard drives, and i've never had a hard drive failure since i first got one in 1985 ($5000 for an 40 meg external Tallgrass Technologies drive..and i still have it, and it still works!)

the only drives i've ever heard about being unreliable are the "deathstars"...

get a western digital or a maxtor or a segate, which ever is cheaper and is the size you want.

I thinking about 250gb but at this moment I have 2x160gb, that's 320gb combined capacity. what's the point? "

Seagate makes really good drives. I have run several different models with no problems. As said above though, go with one of the big three and you will be fine.

I have been thinking about an external drive, but they are awfully expensive ...

Probably a regular HDD and external enclosure?

Try running it HORIZONTALLY instead of VERTICALLY, and keep it away from heat and enclosed spaces (to permit heat to escape freely). I did this and have not had another problem since.

It's stupid, because Seagate shows the drive oriented vertically on its plastic stand on the box. My advice, stomp on the plastic stand and burn the box.

It would be nice if Marketing people didn't try to do fun things with technical equipment - like that don't actually work in real life - but whaddya gonna do?
