300 is coming out this Tuesday and I'm sure a crap load of people here are going to pick it up. Does anyone know if there's a special edition or whatever scheduled to come out later on? As noted here, there's no DTS in this version which kind of sucks. DVDTalk, who generally knows about this kind of stuff, doesn't say one way or another. I really want to pick this up but I have a feeling we're going to get a DTS/extended version further down the road.

Anyone know? I looked all over the intarweb and didn't find anything definitive.

Oh yeah, may the Gods have mercy on my neighbors when I do buy this cause I'm going to turn it up until I shake the walls. :)

I got the HD-DVD version pre-ordered, that is the only special edition I was looking forward to. :D

the HDDVD version will have the most features. HDDVD has an option where if you can play the pre-CG version of the movie (where you see only blue screen and actors) alongside the actual movie (the pre-CG version being in PIP).

the HDDVD version also has a game to play off your hddvd player.

bump for the weekday crowd...I know there's the standard DVD, the SE 2 disc DVD, and the HD/BR discs. I'm trying to figure out if anyone knows if there will be another version released down the road w DTS or other features.

Figured someone here would know...this is Anandtech after all.

Do they typically announce this at/before release? Seems like they would keep in under wraps so you have to buy the same fvcking movie 2-3 times.

They wouldn't announce it before the initial release date. Think Lord of the Rings would have had so many DVD sales if everyone knew 500 more versions would be released?

I can't wait for tomorrow. Going to pick up the BR version on my way to work. I had pre-ordered it from Amazon, but the expected delivery wasn't until August 5th-9th.

what's style of music is in this film? I missed it in the theater, but I really dig the look of the film. I'm trying to decide if it's a rental or if I should just buy it. Most of the ads for the video release have a modern rock cue. It will be disappointing if that's what's in the film.

Can't wait to see it on HD-DVD. I'm not one to purchase movies so I'll be renting it off Netflix.

I have the soundtrack. It's nothing like what is in the ads. Check out amazon or something like it to preview the music.

The movie is more than worth it! :)

I don't know about anyone else, but did anyone who has watched stargate SG1 think that Xerxes was a Goa'uld? I kept looking for his Jaffa the entire movie, but saw none. :p

I already have it. But I really want the HD or Blu-Ray version. Will be a great movie to see in HD.

mmm the BD version includes 5.1 PCM track. :)

whats funny, is I think the PCM tracks are the more popular audio track to include on BDs, compared to DD HD and DTS-MA (the latter being almost impossible to find)

Uh, of course they're more popular. It's PCM over a high bitrate, lossy codec.

Thanks, I checked out the 300 DVD launch website. It had some cues as did the composer's site.

Looks like I'll be picking up the HD DVD tomorrow after work.

i'm glad to see the beloved 9.4 Gb DVD being replaced for a good reason.

DD-TrueHD and DTS-MA are supposed to be lossless compression. Much like FLAC is lossless compression method. Compression is always gonna be favored, as that leaves more room for video and/or extras. They are going to want to give people HD extras, and you need the space. 5mbps for 5.1 PCM, or roughly 2.0mbps for DD-TrueHD (not sure of bitrate for DTS-MA, but I believe its much higher, considering regular DTS is already 1.5mbps on BDs).

DD TrueHD is lossless. It's MLP packed PCM. The same encoding that DVD-A discs use. Basically, it's PCM in a zip file.

Yes. As I was telling destrekor above, Dolby TrueHD is a PCM audio track that is packed (think winzip) into a container for smaller storage size and transfer. The player or some newer receivers unpacks the PCM and sends it to the DAC and amps.

Exactly and Warner Bros is releasing 300 and they also did LoTR. I just find it hard to believe there isn't a Standard DVD DTS version in the works. It's possible I'm looking for something that isn't there but I reserve the right to bump this thread and bitch a few months from now when the DTS version is announced. I'll probably just pick it up now.

I just watched it again on BR. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I can only imagine what it would be like on a DLP projector with a 100"+ screen and a good surround sound system.
