Well it has a 500GB HD, DVD Burner, 3GB of Ram, AMD Athlon II X2 215 , keyboard and mouse included. Windows 7 Prem 64bit as well.

It also has a PCI Express x16 slot open. Killer !!!

Seems to me you can grab this and get a Vid card that doesnt sap too much power and you have a good gaming rig.

If anyone spots something better. Please post up.

I and others may want to just do a total system upgrade to get Win7. Why spend $100 on an operating system if you are on the egde with outdated hardware too.

How fast is an Athlon II X2 215 CPU? 2.0Ghz? It seems kind of slow to me, but a decent dual-core for $300 is a pretty good deal.

Apparently, it's 2.7Ghz. Not bad at all.

Throw in an old 8800GT, and this would make a fine, if not cutting edge, gaming box.

2.7ghz, 512k L2 per core. Sounds like a decent performer.

Just don't expect Supreme Commander to run very well. All Valve/year old+ games should run great.

I just wonder how this AMD chip compares to the Intel e6300 cpu in the Fry's combo this week. Put together a system around that combo with almost exactly the same outfitting that the Compaq has. But I did spend $230 for the setup including a 2GB stick of RAM, 500GB SATA hd, case, 22X DVD-RW, wireless HP keyboard/mouse set, before OS. (Did find a brand new 18.5" Soyo monitor for $60 on clearance.)

This Compaq's price isn't bad at all.

Does anyone know the cpu support list for the system? According to VirtualLarry's link, it can hande AM3 chips and DDR2 RAM. I wonder if it could take the Athlon II x4.

I'm going to bump this, simply so I can look through my posts later and possibly buy this.

Thanks OP.

The CPU may be the entry level Regor but it can do fine according to what I read about it.

Sure its no Intel I-7 core. But for $300 bills and an operating system. Not bad.

An awesome deal, but a video card upgrade will be required if you need DVI or HDMI output. According to the specifications listed at HP's site, this PC has integrated nVidia 6150SE graphics with VGA-out only. The motherboard has an ancient chipset.

The searches I found had the computer at $239.99 on Black Friday.

Not bad if you can wait that long and if the model numbers match. They seem to but since the Leaked Black Friday ads were pulled down by OfficeMax. They can change by BlackFriday.

I hate standing in line at 5am.......

Good find on the chipset. I just assumed the newer CPU would require a newer chipset/mobo.

I hate assuming.......

;)

All in all especially at the BF price. Its a good deal.

There's a 5am??? Don't think I've ever seen it. ;)

I read that about the BF ad. I would rather get it now and not have to rush out and wait in line only to miss out on the 5 or so they have in stock.

Besides this frees me up to try for other BF sales. Like Blu-ray movies or a hard drive for this thing.

This $360 Acer at J&R is similar

http://www.jr.com/acer-computer/pe/ACE_AX1301U9032/

They have the same CPU, but the Acer only has a 360GB hard drive, although it does have HDMI out and gigabit ethernet. The Compaq has a 500GB hard drive, VGA out, and 100Mbps ethernet.

If you don't have to pay sales tax to J&R the $60 price difference is smaller.

Thanks for the JR suggestion. After looking at it. The Staples deal is better from the fact that the case is a BTX design and you can work with it, replace the mobo easily etc.

The JR is a compact chasis and much harder to work with and upgrade.

Again, Thanks for the suggestion.

BTX? Are you sure it's not just an upside-down ATX?

I'm sitting on the fence on this one. I replace my computers rarely-my main home computer is an original Athlon (2300 I think) with AGP graphics, roughly five + years old. I'd like to be able to run games made since the turn of the century, but I'm not a heavy duty gamer. My machine is on 24/7 and also runs as a music server for my Squeezebox-I have an external 1 TB drive attached (which will migrate to the new system as is).

I'm debating between this model and SKU 828333 HP Qad Core 2 8300 which costs substantially more, $549. This model includes 8 GB memory (DDR3) versus 3 GB for the $300 system and a 750 GB HD versus 500 GB.

I'd hate to buy the $300 system, then have to spend more for memory, more for better graphics card (may be necessary for either), more for bigger HD, etc. shortly down the road.

Also holding back because of upcoming Black Friday, but to be truthful desktop deals have become pretty rare in the last six months or so. Everyone seems to be pushing laptops.

Any thoughts/guidance?

Yeah you are right. According to the pics on newegg it is as you say. I dont know what I was looking at when I saw the eggs pics. ;)

NEWEGG PICS

As far as some guidance. The other computer you are looking at is overkill for you. This is considering what you have right now and what you do with it. Plus is will use more energy as you say you have it on 24/7.

One point for sure is a graphics card will be needed for either computer.

You can always buy an extra Hard Drive when you need one.

If you want to jump on this. Get the computer and a videocard. When you get low on space. Get a new hardrive. The system memory should suffice at 3gb with Win7 since you will be getting a videocard.

My reservation about this computer would be the power supply but you do have a 1 year warrantee.

It does have a free PCI slot for a tuner card. It's also fast enough to run sites like Hulu and it has a DVD burner to offload video to. It says it has 6 channel audio as well.

Maybe not a super HTPC, but for the price it can work. You would just need to add a video card to support your tv (DVI, HDMI, etc.).

The $35AR card Mac linked above would probably work just fine.

Here's a little cheaper one without a rebate
