I'm not a scotch person and know absolutely nothing about it, however, my father is very big scotch drinker and will certainly know what a good one is. I'd like to surprise him for X-mas with a good bottle and know nothing.

Can anyone offer some links or suggestions for me or anything that will get me in the right direction?

I like The Macallan personally. Macallan 25 year is the best i've tried. I don't have much experience with other higher priced varieties though. *shrug*

The Balvenie Sherry Oak 21 year. I think they are about $120-150. You dont *need* to spend $300 to get a great bottle of single malt.

You should make every effort to find out what brands he likes. Some hardcore Scotch drinkers don't like single malts or don't like blends, etc. Call your Mom and ask her to scan his collection to give you a better idea of what he drinks.

I think the most expensive scotch I've tasted has been around $150 a bottle. I've never had a $600 scotch so I don't know how much it really improves once you go past $200, but I'm guessing that the flavour of scotch will improve dramatically from a $20 bottle to a $50 bottle, significantly from $50 to $100, noticeably from $100 to $150, and then probably not much past that. When bottles start costing $500 I think you are paying more for the rarity of the scotch as opposed to the quality (of course they're good though!).

That being said, you should find out what your dad likes and then do some research on similar types. I personally like heavy, smoky, peaty scotches, so single Islay malts are what I generally go for. Some people like more subdued peat flavours and like to bring out the other flavours, and those people generally like highland malts.

Try to avoid blended scotches. If he likes scotch, he probably has a particular flavour he is going for. Blends kind of round everything out and while nice, they don't have much character. This ties in to my last paragraph in that you have to make sure you get a scotch with the characteristics he likes.

Do you know offhand what his favourite scotch is?

I think I'd suggest trying to find some scotches online that you can order that you can't easily get where you are. He might like the variety.

at ~$500 there aren't that many bottles of scotch that are more expensive.

even though its nice, but do not get the Johnnie Walker Blue. It's played out, generic (compare to what you can get), and seems like the default "Oh, I don't know what to pick, so I will pick JW Blue" present.

there are plenty of boutique Scotch that's in the price range above $100.

instead of a single bottle, a conoisseur would also appreciate the chance to try a variety of scotch, so you could get 2 good bottles instead of 1 great one... or 3 good bottles that he hasnt had the chance to try

If he's a big of a Scotch drinker as you claim, he's probably got several bottles empty or full in the house somewhere. Just look and see what his favorite brand is and buy him a case of it.
