30" Monitors - HP ZR30w vs Dell U3011

I really want a 120Hz OLED super uber 30" computer monitor.....but since that doesn't exist, and probably won't for at least another 2 years I want to settle for the best technology now.

I've been looking around the web quite a bit, and it seems the best two 30" monitors for gaming are the HP ZR30w and the Dell U3011. I currently own a Dell 24" widescreen and have been very happy with it. But doing the research it seems that the HP ZR30w has much less input lag (approx 8ms), and therefore would be less susceptable to ghosting. Reading different reviews around the web, people seem to love both monitors, and all the reviewers gave big thumbs up. However, no one has done a comparison review to my knowledge. I did see some comments about a "buzzing" sound coming from the HP when the brightness level is reduced below 80%. I would hate to be a victim of that if it's true.

The Dell has many more inputs and outputs than the HP does. The HP also has no OSD controls, settings have to be changed in software. But then that's what's supposed to give the HP that great input lag value, so it seems to be what you value more. Smoother video games or lots of control settings.

I know I don't want to go with the multiple monitor setup because I don't want to deal with that many wires, power, and configuration issues. I have an ATI Radeon 4890, which should be "good enough" until the new 6900 series ATI's come out (which I plan on buying). So I shouldn't have a resolution problem.

I guess I'd love to hear from anyone who has either of these monitors and their respective experiences. I plan on purchasing from Newegg just in case I get a lemon so I can RMA worry free......

Sorry for the long post, and thanks for any advice!

You need to get a 2ms or 1ms screen. That is the problem with 30 inches you wont get that, thus gaming will be laggy and ghosting.

Get a 27 inch 2ms compared to a 30" 8ms .... you wont regret it and thank me later.

I really like my hp zr30w, it even comes with a DP cable, making it perfect for an ATI card with a DP. Now I don't need to worry about using up one of the DVI ports, and Dont need an adapter. Anyways, its a great monitor. Not sure if the dell has a DP or not.

I own a Dell 3008WFP and it's not laggy at all. No 'visible' ghosting either, even in twitch heavy FPS games. Yes, I know it's there but I don't see it.

Case in point... anyone that picky should get a CRT, as you aren't going to see a notable difference between 2ms and 8ms when it comes to lag. It'll be a marginal improvement at best.

Made my decision. I went with the HP ZW30R because I think it will be better for gaming performance, and I have no intention of ever hooking it up to a console or the like. Almost $1300 from newegg........We'll see how it goes!

I just got the U3011 a few days back (the 25% off coupon, total came out to ~1200 tax included). So far I'm very happy with it.

One issue I had was when I first turned on the monitor, I got this slightly green tint (I think it's green?). I was a little peeved...but after a minute, the tint all of a sudden disappeared. Overall, the tint isn't severe and it goes away fairly quickly, so it doesn't bother me at all.

So far, no buzzing or anything of the sort. And I do have to say, I don't see any input lag at all -- because my video card (8800 GTS 512) couldn't run games smoothly at native resolution anyway!

Yeah, time to go upgrade my video card. When does the 6970 come out again?

There is no comparison between a 27" TN panel and a 30" IPS panel.
