sony ps3 video card = 30 million dollars to nvidia
new sony contract => 30 million dollars to nvidia

whats sony up 2 this time, could it be a new ps3 gpu (last minute change) or something for the psp?

the cost/ benefit theory tells us that ps3 would not have paid more than 30 million for this unless they expect to earn that much more,.

what the hell can earn more than the ps3 can which requires a contract with nvidia?

It could be any number of things, and possibly several combined in one. nVidia makes GPUs for cell phones, computers, and I'm sure they could develop a mobile one for a PSP replacement. Who knows, it might even could be some type of chip that will help decode hi-def content that they'll put in Blu-Ray players. Or maybe its just further development of the PS3 GPU so that they can continue to shrink it down and get it to consume less power.

I assume Sony vaio laptops to have Nvidia GPU's aswell as their mobile division (Sony Ericsson).
But that still doesnt equate to £30 million.

Who knows whats in store.

i am thinking it could also be a next gen GPU for sony-ericsson mobile phones, that is a hot topic these days where a bunch of companies are investing in, although i would be really really really really rEALLY happy if it was ps3 related, haha, SLI nvidia, that would be rocking.

There's no way this has anything to do with the PS3. That's what the first $30M was for (designing the PS3 GPU).

The PS3 GPU's specs have been finalized for some time now, and consoles are designed to have ~5 year lifecycles (that's the model Sony's been using).

Could be for anything else, though.

nope. in the end sony will win this round as well. MS does not know crap about making consoles rock and sony always has square and capcom in its palm so no prob for sony. as much as i like MS (NOT) i still know sony will win.

Microsoft didn't even look at Nvidia.

If I remember correctly, Nvidia didn't meet the goal they said they would on producing GPUs for the xbox. I think they pulled some other crap that also pissed off MS.

Im pretty sure their deal with Microsoft was far more lucrative for Nvidia than their deal with Sony is. Not to mention that Microsoft had no intentions of ever working with nVidia again.

Nvidia didnt want to go with MS because MS tried to screw them out of a ton of money and court battle ensued.

MS basically walked in and said "your gpu price is too high, its this now" and started paying the lower price. Nvidia sued and won the difference.
