30 men lift bus to save baby in New York

NEW YORK (AFP) - About 30 men lifted a schoolbus to save a pregnant woman struck by the bus, enabling the baby to be born before the woman died of her injuries, the New York Post said Friday.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg paid tribute to the victim, Donnette Sanz, 33, a traffic cop who was off duty when she was hit Thursday by the bus in the city's Bronx section.

"It is a terrible poignancy that Donnette's son's birthday will now coincide with the day his mother died. She gave her life in service to our city," the mayor said.

"A superhuman effort by 30 strangers who lifted the vehicle off her body miraculously saved her baby before she died," the New York Post said.

"We did not really communicate, we all just started lifting. We lifted it up and someone pulled her out," Madalina Diaz, 42, told the paper.

The woman, six months pregnant, was rushed to the hospital, where the baby was born by caesarian section a few minutes before she died.

Wow, that's really sad, but that's really great at the same time. There is still some shred of decency humans have afterall.

Or just plain survival instincts. Sad but remarkable story none the less.

Walker had "20 suspensions" to his driver's license. Walker told the Post that he did not have a driver's license because he couldn't pay parking tickets.

That's soo messed up

Ok, it's great that 30 people's survival instincts kicked in and they all helped each other rescue the pregnant woman's baby.

There is still a shred of human of decency when it comes to survival instincts kicking to rescue people after all.

Survival instincts would not involve running to the scene of an accident and assisting. Survival instincts would be "danger, run AWAY." HERD instincts maybe.

unless she was still directing traffic, then no, she didn't.

Nope, she just happened to be crossing the street when a 72 year man driving a van hit her.

jesus christ how the hell does someone with 20 suspensions get to drive anything?

what kind of piss poor condition does this van/bus have to be in for the 'brakes to go out'? how often does that actually happen?

Ok then, will just call it human instinct.

Anyone else amazed that the baby could survive being 3 months premature??
Not really, nor would I be terribly surprised at a child surviving extrication from a dying mother. I'm surprised it survived both, though.

definitely herd instincts. Looking out for each other, natural in the concept of preserving the species.

A little, even though my twins were born at 26 weeks which is just over 3 months premature. They're 15 months old now and doing great, but it's still amazing. Doctors and science rock!
