30 inch monitor HDMI?

So my neighbor has a 30 inch Apple monitor. I'm not sure the year but is at least a few years old. It is DVI. Not sure if it also has VGA but I can check.

My neighbor wants to get a new laptop and this will be his primary computer. The laptop has HDMI and VGA output. Am I correct that his new laptop won't be able to drive the 30" Apple display at full resolution? And what connection does he need on his laptop in order to drive this display.
 
Nope it won't be able to drive the 30 inch at native 2560x1600 unfortunately. To fully use his 30 inch monitor your neighbour need to find a laptop with Display Port out and use a DP to DVI dongle.
