Hey all,

Trying to figure out how to upgrade my current PC:

8800GT
C2D E4500 OC'd to 3.0GHZ
DDR2800 4gb G.Skill

I snagged an Asus GTX470 for $210 AR and put it in my rig. Severely bottlenecked by the CPU so I'm looking to upgrade CPU/Mobo/RAM. Ran 3DMarkVantage on trial and only got 10k GPU score and 27k CPU score.

I was looking for something as cheap as possible while still maintaining the goodies. I plan to keep this computer for the next 2-3 years so willing to go a little bit higher on the cost if it'll stick around for longer. I game mostly on this computer.

Looking at AMD 955BE right now. Need a recommendation on a good solid mobo with overclock capabilities. If I OC, do I need to go for 1600mhz ram?

Fry's has a Cool Master 212+ HSF for $9 after rebate so I might snag that unless it's not a good performer. Also have Corsair DDR3 1333mhz 4gb RAM for $45 (after tax and -$25 rebate)

Thanks guys.

P.S. I don't like to buy from Newegg if I can help it because I'm in CA and they charge tax here :(

The Hyper 212+ is a good HS/F...its replaced my old budget recomendation (AC 64). Cant be beat under 30$.

Wont need 1600MHz RAM, but 1333MHz could be handy...if its the standard 1.5v with CAS7.

Oh and as for MOBO, Id say go for a Gigabyte or Asus 8xx series with the SATA/USB 3. Not a ton different from the older 7xx MOBOs, but they cost similar so no reason to get an older design.

With a black edition CPU though, even a 75$ MOBO should get you some decent overclocking.

I disagree, his CPU is an origional C2D with 2MB Cache...I think it was like 2GHz or something, so its overclocked pretty far. Even at 3GHz it probably is going to hold back his GPU. An upgrade to a modern CPU, a higher clocked version with more cores, should definately help.

Yea it's a 2.2ghz and I've OC'd it up to 3.0ghz. Was trying for 3.2 but can't get it to post.

The Corsair RAM that I listed is CAS9 1.5v. Not worth it for that price?

if you want to upgrade now, go for an i5-760. If you can wait, wait for next gen. Either way, the CPU will probably outlive your gaming days. 1333 vs. 1600 won't make a difference nor do timings. Get whatever is cheapest by a reliable brand (e.g. GSkill, Corsair, etc.)

Well, I tried putting the gtx470 and running FFXIV on lowest settings, and it didn't help my FPS whatsoever. I also multibox in WoW which makes me micro-stutter a lot and I really think its my CPU.

My OC might not be the most stable though.

 That's the proper test for a CPU bottleneck.

This 955 + M4A87TD EVO combo should let you overclock decently for a nice price. DDR3 1600 isn't strictly necessary for overclocking, but it gives you some more flexibility when you're trying to dial in those last few MHz.

One more question:

My powersupply is a Corsair 520w modular from my old system. Will it keep up with the new 955 + gtx470?

Thanks
