3 Windows Vista Questions

1. Which version of vista would be good for me? I want vista strictly so I could play games like alan wake and so that I can take advantage of the future technology of DX10. Are there any horrible restrictions on the entry level version of windows vista?
2. If I wanted to dual boot both windows XP pro and windows vista, do I need to buy the full version of whatever vista version I buy, or can I dual boot with just the upgrade?
3. Is a tri or quad boot possible? Lets say I wanted to add my copy of windows 98 to the mix so that I can play some old games that don't work on xp or vista, can I do a tri or even a quad boot?
Thanks in advance.

Vista Ultimate or Vista Home Premium would work just fine. Vista Basic, IIRC, is not being sold in the US.

Yes, you'd need to buy the full version since you're not doing an upgrade.

Yes, it is possible. However, you could also take advantage of virtualization via Virtual PC for some games (see http://blogs.msdn.com/virtual_pc_guy -- he does this quite a bit).

It's possible but it's a huge PITA and not really worth it.

Home Basic is, Starter Edition is the one that is not being sold in the US or most "developed" countries.

yeah the basic one is coming to the US. So do you think I'll be fine with the basic edition of vista?

It is not worth dual booting XP and Vista if ya plan to use system restore in Vista. This is due to lousy, or lazy programing ... However you can use SR if you hide the drives partitions from XP . This is due to snapvol.sys that kills your Vista SR files.

Well, I'd like to play my DX9 games in xp and my DX10 games in vista. If UT2K7 is xp compatible I may consider getting alan wake for X360 instead and save myself the hassle for now.

Uh, why? There is no reason that DX9 games won't play in Vista. That is what DX9L is for.

I only have 2GB of ram, that's not enough for some games to run great in vista.

Time will tell.

True, but right now too many people are jumping on the "OMG VISTA IS SLOW!!!" bandwagon with no real idea what they're talking about.

Maybe I should wait until crysis it out, if Alan Wake is really good, then I might get vista right away.

Do games even run in virtual PC's? anything graphical i've ever run in a VM other than the OS (even that is laggy) has not been very smooth.

MS's Virtual PC 2004 emulates an S3 Trio video card (ca. 1993?). No built-in 3D support.
