Hi,

I have a Maxtor 40GB Model: D540X-4K hard drive. Out of the blue, this thing just fails. Three weeks old? Wow! That was a sudden death. Do you know if this kind of drive has had any problems? I don't think I have my CompUSA receipt lying around, so maybe I can get a direct replacement from Maxtor.

Any troubleshooting tips for a dead (?) drive? I already tried connecting it to another computer, but it sees it as having 0mb. The other computer gives me a primary drive fails. Damn!

Thanks..

In my experience, Maxtor has excellent RMA service!

I have had 2 drives of theirs fail on me in the last 5 years (not bad I guess) and they have been very accomodating getting me a replacement in a very timely fashion! If you have a C.C., they will express replace you a drive (took about 2 days for me:)). Without a C.C., they will require you to send your drive in, and they will send one back to you!

G/L, and drive failures of all brands has been higher this past year than in any past year! New tech and product lines probably the major reason why:confused:

Make sure you request to have it cross-shipped. Sometimes they won't offer to do it if you don't ask.

Ahh.. Thanks for the tip! I found my CompUSA receipt. However, it clearly states "NO RETURN AFTER 15 DAYS." Dang! Well, I'm going to download PowerMax from Maxtor.com and get myself some error codes to put on my RMA request form.

By the way, explain cross-shipping clearly please. From what I know, cross-shipping only applies to selling an item indirectly and having someone else ship it. Does Maxtor do this with local outlets then?

Well, time to get these ink stains out of my hands. My first try at refilling didn't go to well. Thanks once again!
