Higher platter density means slower rotational drives can achieve the same speeds as older drives. Perhaps not in random access of a bunch of small files, but no disc drive will be great for such a thing anyways. These large and slower spinning drives are meant for storage purposes, particularly large media files.

The graph suggests we'll be up to about 10TB by 2015. 1PB would be nice, but it ain't gonna happen that soon. 🙂
