3 Pin motherboard fan connector to 4 pin videocard fan connector?

Dunno if this is a better fit for Cases & Cooling or VC&G, posting here as it relates exclusively to video cards.

I have a Zalman 7500cu VGA cooler on my Sapphire HD5770, but the cooler has a 3 pin motherboard header to power the fan. The Videocard itself has that smallish 4 pin header for the native VGA cooler to be powered and controlled by the card and drivers. I also have my old cooler off my deceased HD4850, which won't fit directly onto the HD5770 (which would make this whole question moot) but does have the exact same 4 pin vga connector that the HD5770 has.

The HD5770 is going into a SILVERSTONE Sugo SG03B-F micro-atx mini-tower and the less cable I have to run and the more fan connectors I have free for case fans, the better. Additionally, it'd just be nice to know how to do this for any future aftermarket coolers my cards might end up with.

So the question is this:

Is there any way to splice or re-pin the 4pin connector from the old 4850 cooler in place of the 7500cu's 3-pin motherboard header, and can such a configuration even work (fan control is a bonus but certainly not a must).

Thank you.
