3-pin HSF question

I have to replace my HSF on a Pentium-based motherboard. It has a 2-pin connection on the board, whereas the HSF connection is a 3-pin. Am I assuming correctly that the 3rd wire is to report fan rpm?

your assumption is correct. you might have to try both positions, but the plug *should* fit on there and work with your fan
 
3-pin HSFs generally are: Black=grd, red=12vdc, yellow=RPMs, check your mobo manual for it's connector wiring...
