I have 2 computers and 3 network cards.
PC 1 has a 3com NIC successfully connected to a cable modem.
PC 1 also has a D-Link connected to PC 2 through a crossover cable to it's D-Link NIC.

PC 1 Network has:
Client for Microsoft Networks (also in PC 2)
Microsoft Family Logon (also in PC 2)
D-Link Device (also in pc 2)
IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol (also in pc 2)
TCP/IP -> D-Link (also in pc 2)
File & printer sharing for MS Networks (also in pc 2)

PC 1
IP: 192.168.1.1 (pc 2 192.168.1.2)
SM: 255.255.255.0 (pc 2 is same)
Disable WINS Resolution in both
No gateway in either
DNS disabled in both

PC 1 id is as assigned by cable carrier. PC 2 is "P133"
Workgroup is same in both as assigned by cable carrier.

Inside pc 2's network neighborhood I can see P133, the ID of pc 2.
Inside pc 1's network neighborhood I see nothing......
Damn! Now I see pc 2. I don't get it. All I just did is change the computer description in pc 2 from two words to one.
Maybe one of these NICS is intermitantly bad.

Now it disappeared again.

I am burned out.

Try setting you Protocol in PC 2 TCP/IP--->D-link to "assign IP automatically"

Now I have NetBEUI. But now I have a really good book "This Wired Home" by Alan Neibauer. Over 450 pages of home networking. It's a bit lite on broadband, but it covers ICS for static IPs and includes the need for clients to use a "gateway" entry - something that MS suggests not to do. Apparently, the MS instructions assume you set at dynamic IP even though they say you can us static IPs.
Actually, I'll probably resort to WinProxy rather than ICS.

I should also add that now I have my network in place. It seems that sometimes it takes several minutes for the pc's to recognize each other. Also, I removed the cable and reinstalled it. It's real stable now. NetBEUI may be responsible for that.
