suffocation

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Three boys whose bodies were found in the trunk of a car following a massive, two-day search died from accidental suffocation, not foul play, authorities said Saturday.

The bodies were discovered Friday when David Agosto lifted the trunk of a banged-up maroon Toyota Camry in the yard where the boys were last seen. There, he found the bodies of his 6-year-old son Daniel Agosto; 5-year-old Jesstin Pagan and 11-year-old Anibal Cruz.

Officials said no foul play was suspected, but it was not clear why searchers - who combed the yard next to Cruz family home - did not find the boys sooner.

The car was searched when police first responded to the report of the missing children Wednesday at about 8:30 p.m., Police Chief Edwin Figueroa said, though prosecutor Vincent Sarubbi said it can be inferred that the trunk of the battered car had not been checked. He said police and prosecutors will issue a report on the handling of the search within 30 days.

ya know... i am known to be a cold hearted b1tch. and i have no problem with that.

but ... when it comes to children, or animals.... things like this just gut me and reduce to me to tears.

there is just something about harming, death, suffering of innocents that just get to me.

CAMDEN, N.J. ? Three boys who disappeared Wednesday and were the subject of a massive search effort were found dead Friday in the trunk of a car parked in a driveway next to the yard where they were last seen.

The bodies of Jesstin Pagan, 5; Daniel Agosto, 6; and Anibal Cruz, 11, were discovered shortly before 7 p.m. by the father of one of the boys.

Yolanda DeNeely Aguilard, an aide to Mayor Gwendolyn Faison, confirmed that the bodies had been found. She had no immediate information on how the boys died.

A neighbor, Carmen Cilla, said she saw David Agosto open the trunk of the maroon Toyota and collapse to his knees screaming.

Police rushed to the scene and immediately cordoned off the property with yellow crime scene tape and draped white sheets over the tape to shield the car from view.

Both Thursday and Friday, up to 150 public safety officials, including police, emergency medical technicians, firefighters and state police helicopter pilots, scoured a city neighborhood and the banks of the nearby Delaware River hoping to find the boys.

Neighbors passed out fliers to passing motorists with the boys' photos and descriptions.

Earlier Friday, the parents of the children pleaded for help during a tearful televised news conference.

"All you guys, we love you. We want you back. We're not mad at you. Please come back. Please bring my baby back," said Jesstin's mother, Jessica Pagan. "If you have him, please let him go, please."

Anibal Cruz and Danny Agosto both lived in Camden's largely Puerto Rican Cramer Hill neighborhood. Pagan lived several miles away in Mount Ephraim. Pagan and his mother had been visiting Cruz's home.

It was not immediately clear if the car had been searched previously. Nor was it clear how the boys got into the vehicle.

that was my first thought... but we dont know what happened yet.. they could have been playing hide and seek from their parents... or they could have feared getting in trouble for something and were waiting for things to calm down...

whatever it is...it is heartbreaking.

and really sad that the sniffing dogs did not pick up the scent when they were right next door.

edit: If it turns out that someone did anything horrible to these little children... i would wish the worst things imaginable would happen to them.

Wait, they killed the kids and STASHED THEM IN THE NEIGHBOR'S TRUNK? (I assume the neighbor is not responsible, because he did discover them, right?) That's NUTS.

Strange, they don't look blonde with blue eyes. Maybe it takes at least 3 of them to make it national.

Either they were playing hide and seek and got locked in the car :(

or

Someone put them there... :(

Suspicions are also arising since no one bothered to look in the trunk of the car that was on the property for so many days. No police, rescue team, or dog even pointed toward the abandoned car and yet one of the parents goes straight for the car trunk.

Something doesn't sound right here. They were the target of a massive manhunt including dogs, and no one found them for 2 days, until the dad just happened to open up the trunk of a car parked next door?

:( for the boys.

Yeah, I found it odd and kinda disturbing that they would show that footage.

:( for the boys.

Police had said they did an exhaustive search of the entire neighborhood -- about three square miles. Earlier Friday police announced a $9,000 reward for information leading to the boys' return.

They were last seen around 5 p.m. Wednesday playing on the street where two of them live. Elba Cruz, Anibal's mother, said she left the three children playing outside in the yard for five to 10 minutes while she cooked dinner.

CNN's Allan Chernoff contributed to this report.
