One of the most outstanding software deals of the last ten years was the three license "family pack" of Windows 7. They all installed with the same key. So what about Windows 10? Will it install on three different computers using the same family pack key?

Probably. But I think your best choice is just to run the upgrade. Once it activates, the key will not longer be relevant.

Yes, I'd run in place upgrades on all of them to secure W10 entitlements.

This is what I would do. I would NOT do a clean install of Win10 and enter a Win7 family pack key, as it would likely "consume" it, and not allow two more Win10 activations with the same Win7 key.

Well, I think Windows would know what "type" of key it is, the same way it would know what type of Windows you are doing the upgrade on (Professional, Home, etc). There is no reason to think Microsoft can't tell it's a 3-license key for the number itself.

They can't. Ever try to activate a family pack key by phone? You would think that they would be able to identify it as a Family Pack key, and "know" that it's allowed three activations. But when the electronic voice asks how many computers is it installed on, if you answer "three", it tells you that you've installed it too many times, and to buy a new copy.

You MUST not say anything when you call the phone activation, and WAIT until you get a human to pick up on the line, then explain to them that you have a family pack key, and then you can get an activation.

The family pack keys only show up as Win7 Home Premium Retail Upgrade. They don't show up as anything special, as far as I know.

That is odd, and dare I say it, stupid. I guess they assume people will do three activation, and that will be the end of it.

I had to call one time and they specifically asked how many computers it was running on. I told them two, and this would be the third. They helped me activate it. Just curious how Windows 10 upgrade handles this.
