3 Given Organs From HIV-Positive Donor
By ARIEL DAVID, Associated Press Writer

ROME - Three patients at hospitals in Tuscany were mistakenly given organs from an HIV-positive donor, raising serious concerns about transplant procedures in Italy.

A 41-year-old woman's kidneys and liver were taken after she died of a brain hemorrhage at Florence's Careggi hospital and were implanted due "to a tragic human error," the hospital said in a statement Monday. The director of the regional transplants agency said the patients' chances of infection are high.

The HIV test on the organs had come back positive, but "unfortunately the expert who did the report wrote down 'negative' for all the tests, including this one," said Careggi director Mauro Marabini.

The three patients have been told of the mistake and will undergo tests to determine if they have been infected with the virus that causes AIDS. The three were receiving anti-retroviral drugs.

"They asked immediately if the transplanted organ was working, and it was working perfectly," Marabini said. "They reacted quite calmly."

Franco Filipponi, director of the regional transplant agency, told the news agency ANSA that the likelihood of infection is high. "Even if the implanted organs do not carry blood the virus can still be present in some cells and can therefore be transmitted," he said.

Prosecutors in Florence opened an investigation, ANSA reported.

Health Minister Livia Turco pledged to improve safety measures once the inquiry was completed, but stressed that the transplant system has saved many lives. "I cannot hide my preoccupation for an excessive alarm that could reduce trust in this system and slow the growth of donations, leading to further damage for other patients," Turco said.

Italy's public health system is not new to scandal. Last month, authorities ordered nationwide inspections after a magazine report on Rome's largest hospital showed images of corridors soiled with dog feces and garbage, unguarded radioactive material, abandoned medical records and workers smoking next to patients.

Police found that about 17 percent of hospitals, mostly in southern and central Italy, had problems serious enough to recommend possible judicial investigations against 111 people.

Kinda sad, but think of it this way: (and the recipients did, obviously) Without the organs they'd be dead.

If you were going to be dead in a month from liver/heart/kidney failure, and the only organ you could get was from an HIV+ person, would you take it?

Sadly, that's not necessarily true. Two of the organs were kidneys, which someone can receive dialysis for years. The liver, which you do need once it goes into failure, is one that doesn't require someone to die, as a transplant recipient can use a section from a live person.

That's a toughie.

If I don't take it now, I could be dead in a month. If I DO take it, I could be dead several years down the road after a LONG LONG illness.

Tough call....

Most people with HIV live quite long healthy lives now and are never ill.

I can perhaps understand how somebody could make a mistake and mark an organ as safe instead of HIV positive, but this level of unsanitary conditions, HTF did hospital corridors get soiled with dog feces? Somehow I think that giving patents HIV infected organs won't kill you as quickly as being a patent in one of these hospitals for a long period of time.

I would. However, I'm just guessing that there was a good chance of these individuals getting non-HIV organs. It's just a shame, that's all.

good point... and i thought, "but what about your wife," but then i thought that she probably wouldn't care... if you're the only one who has sex with her, it probably wouldn't matter as much. all that would probably matter is that you die old together, whether it's from aids or not.

Ah, good to know.

Not that I plan on getting HIV or anything. ;)

Anyway I would actually have to HAVE SEX to get it, or use a dirty needle, or get a organ transplant none of which I do anymore or can afford. :(

Sounds like that episode of Scrubs with Dr. Cox.

oh, you mean every episode of 'scrubs'? they all have dr. cox in them...

Didn't want to give too much away, but here it goes:

SPOILERS
One of the annoying, recurring characters on scrubs (the chick from MAD TV) dies from what is suspected to be a purposeful overdose (suicide). The hospital is barely keeping alive 3 people that are in dire need of organ transplants. Dr. Cox makes the call to use her organs, but it turns out that they were from a person who died of Rabies, not an overdose. This results in the death of all 3 patients.

It's actully quite easy to protect your spouse from HIV. There are quite a few +/- couples out there who remain that way for years and years.

A patient donated all of her organs upon her death, but shortly after, the lab finds out she died of rabies. All of the patients ended up dying. One of the patients got a kidney transplant, which among transplants, is one of the least life threatening.

Good question, you'd want to know what the odds of another organ showing up in time might be, though. In any case, I'd also want to do some fairly radical and experimental treatments on both myself and the organ pre-transplant, but that's just me. :)
