3 DVD drives: best one?

Hi,

I am getting rid of my 10x Pioneer DVD. Its going bad. I want to replace it with a new 12x DVD but i am not sure what brand to get. I know it won't be another Pioneer! Had 2 Slot loading ones and both have gone bad. I am thinking of either, NEC, Samsung or Toshiba.

Don't know anything about the NEC except for its cheap. Samsung has started making some very very good products lately so there an option. I had a 4x Toshiba and didn't really like it so i don't know to much about there 12x.

Any help?

105s is definitely the way to go if you don't care about noise, but maybe the new ones are quieter. most ppl can't stand the loud access reads, it's like a 747 taking off. same general consensus i've seen on the forums.

may i ask what went wrong with you pioneer drives?... i'm lookin into gettin one soon.. i also have a pioneer cd player in my car (slot load of course) and the mechanism seems fine to me and is working in tip top shape...

THANKS

the 105s is just about the loudest cd-rom ever, by far. it soundslike a 737 taking off in all respects, while watching dvd movies i've got to turn up my klipsches to compensate for them 😉

my case is absolutely silent w/ panaflo fans and an ibm 75gxp, so it's really annoying when that thing "boots" up

i've been considering getting a new dvd instead of it

I got an acer 16 speed it was a bargin at $200 (thats australian dollars) and It works very well, thou it is a bit louder than my old 4 speed slot loader... or maybe that is the 4 fans in the computer.
