3 drive RAID 0+1

Lonyo

Lifer
I currently have 2x80GB HDD's, and I'm going to puprage eventually.
Is it possible to do a RAID 0 with 2x80GB then use a single 160GB as the mirror?
The obvious thought I had was that having a single drive mirror would limit the speed of the array to the speed of the single drive, so it wouldn't be worth it for the minimal speed incrase you would get anyway.

Has anyone tried it, and does it limit speeds to the single drive's speed?

yes and no.. most low end controller does not support that option...

what controller are you using..

None yet. This is for s future build (so I don't know what RAID controller I would be using, probably whatever came on the motherboard I got - likely to be AMD 939).

The other option is just to have all the drives separate, and back up manually.

I've never seen it done, and I highly doubt it can be done anyhow. The mirror drives in a 1 configuration are just that, mirrors. They're meant to be exact copies of the drive they're mirroring down to performing writes/reads at the same speed at the same time. You can't use 1 big drive as a mirror because 2 drives are going to be trying to write to said drive at once.
