im planning on getting an amd athlon 64(3200+ or 3000+), dfi lanparty motherboard (pci-e), and some value ram. I am going to need a new vid card as mine is agp.

What would you get as a vid card...a 6600 gt and wait 6 months or go for a 6800gt and call it good for atleast a year?

also in your experience is the $50 difference in the 3200+ and 3000+ worth the upgrade?

i mainly play WoW and other games, and listen and watch some movies too

I went with the 6600GT. If it can't play BF2 and AoEIII, then I'll upgrade and lose $20, if it can, then I'm happy.

This is being discussed in the CPU forum. I don't think it's a problem because it's been proven that a memory divider barely scratches performance. With the flexibility, depending on the chip, you could maybe squeeze another .05 or .1 Ghz out of a CPU, but, for me, that's not $50 worth of performance and isn't guaranteed either.

6600GT has a working "video processor", FWIW. And it will handle WoW with ease. But for newer games, if you're a hardcore AA/AF junkie, then you'll need to look towards an X800XL or 6800GT....without AA/AF, there's very little practical difference between the performance of the cards at 1280x1024 in any current game.

would love to wait as i could probably get more for the money but i have a p4 1.7 the original and i drag azz in WoW and other games and my 9500 pro is just not cutting it any more. I get pissed off more and more every time i play the game, and i have had it. time for upgrades

I would never buy a 6600GT. The 800XL is 100% faster for only 50% mo money. Unless you just have a blind hatred for ATi the 800XL is *the* card to have right now at almost every price point. Even if you gave me $600 I'd get the 800XL instead of 850/6800's just on price/performance cost/benefit principle.

Are you overclocking? Stock no way. Clocking?? very debatable on the winny due to multi issues and mem issues with the 9x.

If you buy now, you're better off putting that $50 toward a much faster video card rather than a slightly faster CPU.

Here is what you should do: (my$.02, of course):

By the Biostar NF3 mobo from newegg for like $56, and the 2800+ Retail for $120, and the gig of corsair DDR for $85. Keep the 9500 Pro. Wait until next year. Upgrading that stuff will give you a HUGE increase in performance over your lowly P4, and I stand behind the 9500 Pro as an all time great card, and one that should keep you sane until you can blow your load on the next gen stuff. I would try holding out just a little longer on the PCIE stuff. Also, try the FS/FT forums. I just picked up a A64 2800+ and the Soltek NF3GB board for $150 shipped.

That said, I traded my 9500 Pro for a 9800 Pro, then Doom3 came out and I bought a 6800, and well, you can see how long that lasted by looking at my sig ;) Good luck!
