about 15 years ago, i heard my uncle was crapping out blood. the doctor said the reason that was happening was because he was drinking 3+ cups of coffee a day... since then, he has never drank coffee again, and now he is fine.

i was wondering if there is any truth in this? will drinking 3-5 cups of coffee a day cause something gross like that to happen?

I'm not sure, because I don't like the way coffee tastes, and caffeine makes me feel really weird. I just steer clear of the stuff altogether and things have been going great for me.

I used to drink about 4 large cups a day, and the only bad impact was my blood pressure.

Been drinking coffee since I was 4 (heavy on the cream/sugar), never noticed a bloody dump yet. Though my father had to give up his 6 cup morning routine due to blood pressure.

You're uncle was the exception and not the rule. He obviously had something screwed up with his digestive system.

If drinking 3 to 5 cups of coffee made everyone sh!t blood there wouldn't be a Starbucks on every corner.

caffeine does not make you throw up blood

it releases hormones in your body "fight-fight" response hormone, adrenaline.

It helps you stay focused and awake/alert.

Redbull = 80mg of coffee
Double expresso = 80mg of coffee

caffeine pill (U.S) = 100mg

Overdose? 800mg+

It stays in the body for about 5 hours and the effects are felt within 45mins. The body can become "adjusted" to caffeine.. meaning it can get used to it.

I have been drinking coffee for about 30 years now. I used to drink plenty during the day, but recently cut back to two cups a day until I started night classes. I need the coffee to keep alert until class is over at 10. When I am through with night classes (1 March), I will go back to my usual two cups a day routine. I don't really think that coffee makes you pass blood, like someone else said must have been an ulcer or something that the coffee was bothering.

just wanted to say that i've had to stop drinking coffee b/c it tears up my stomach. I could be the acid in the coffee I drink, but I get an almost immediate stomach ache from drinking any kind of coffee (except the french vanilla cappucino from Speedway!). Yes, I've turned in my man card for the fru fru drinks at the gas station!

I was wondering if he already had ulcers and the acidity caused problems with them.

100mg is the recommended dose, but if you read the fine print on them (or at least every one I've seen, which is a good half dozen brands) you'll find that 100mg is in a HALF of a pill. They recommend breaking it in half. Each pill itself has 200mg of caffeine.

An OD is quite a bit more than 800 mg.

The acidity of coffee is bad for an ulcer. It has nothing to do with the caffeine. That's probably what the doctor was talking about.
