I'm looking for a 3 button USB optical mouse WITHOUT a scroll wheel. Any idea where to get one? I have one that's branded by HP but I need 4 more.

eBay maybe? You could also get some PS/2 ones, and find some USB adaptors. Why on earth would you not want a scroll wheel?

You can always disable the scroll wheel in the Logitech Mouse driver. On all logitech mice if you press down on the wheel, it acts (clicks) like the middle mouse button that it replaced.

lol, why would you want a 3 button mouse? outdated use the scroll with a click maybe some side buttons to if you want more buttons with ease.

Its for a commercial/medical linux box that uses the center mouse button heavily. Trust me, routinely using the scroll wheel as a mouse button sucks....

I found them on the HP web site for $15. They still ship them with workstations

Why not buy a Logitech with a side mouse button and map it so that if funtions like a middle mouse button, that is what I did.

As long as it has a third button, it really does not matter if it is in the middle or not.

I really like the Logitech FirstMouse 3-button, but it's PS/2 and serial only. I don't think they ever made a USB version. A pity because it's a really nice 3-button mouse. I know what you mean when you say it sucks to repeatedly use the scroll wheel as a middle button. I play games with my 3-button mouse and I cannot stand using a scroll mouse. I'd rather use a 2-button :)

I'm looking for the same thing. I do drafting with CATIA V5 (the most heavily used CAD software for aerospace and auto industry). It makes extensive use of the 3-button mouse. Sometimes you need to press two mouse buttons simultaneously. Having a scroll wheel for the middle is a huge pain.

WRONG!!

Dude you can just program your buttons using software. Like Anandtech.com sez, "hardware is only as good as software."

You missed my point entirely. I know you can program the mouse buttons anyway you see fit. When you have to simultaneously press the left button + middle button or midde button + right button for certain operations, having the wheel in the middle is counter-productive. No software programming can help you.

For the majority of users who have never had to deal with what some of us drafters and engineers have to deal with, it's no big deal for you.

That looks like the easyest thing to do if you have you push all 3 buttons at one time.

Edit:
An MX series would be the best IMO. Just remap the back button....

i see your point about the scroll wheel.

have you thought of trying the Logitech MX series like mentioned? i have the 510 and there's two buttons on the side (right handed) that you could map out so that you could press either of those buttons in conjunction with the left or right mouse button.

just a thought.

edit for link.

Better yet, the 518 is the same shape and design but uses a better optical sensor. You could also try using a set of foot pedals and mapping one of the pedals to act like a middle mouse buttion, this would free up your hands/fingers and make you more productive.
