3 beeps on Start up

Need a refresher course on the beep codes. Friend of mine tried adding ram in a Gateway tower machine that is about a year old. When he starts up it gives the three beeps. Wont work by its self or with the old stick.
Any replys appreciated
 
maybe something has become unseated, video card / CPU?
my nice old book here says 3 short beeps = base 64k RAM failure. it is for AMI Bios, and may be quite old, but it still could be right for even a new system.
