That would be SO sweet to have, talk about a quite AND powerful computer, the two words quiet and powerful have NEVER gone together to well.

kinda sexy case too.

Edit: I'm beginning to see the end of our "hobby". When you can buy a fully integrated quiet system with
2 case fans only, complete with killer AGP @5GHZ, you really dont need to build your own. And as less
people build their own, the aftermarket will wither. Kinda like when CD's replaced vinyl - theres no reason
to set up and adjust your tonearm, or buy a super cartridge.

Where's the water? With a name like Tidewater you'd expect it to be water cooled.

Or maybe they use the water from a washing machine that just use TIDE detergent.;)

Yeah right dude, people will charge up the a** for something like that. Your talking about over 10% of the computer market, I doubt building will be phased out anytime soon.

Wow! This looks seriously good.

A passively cooled (and quiet) 3GHz (or more) Northwood in mATX form factor looks great for a LAN-type box if there are any nForce or SiS-like integrated motherboards available at that time.

EDIT: Reading again, I see that it says smaller than mATX. What's up with the new form factor Intel is working on? What's it called?

I wonder if that copper core is also a heatpipe? Or just a big plug of copper.

this time next year, 3ghz isn't all that impressive...
Being fanless and on such a small factor is! :)

Tidewater is what VIA is gonna go out with - after they wont be able to sell any more minisystems.

i don't think that will ring the end of the enthusiast market .. whenever that stuff is availible it will probably be low-end budget stuff compared to what will be in the "mainstream" .. of course i use "low end loosely" .. while the minions are using that Tidewater, we'll probably be talking about Serial ATA and blah blah .. =) just my thoughts ..

But we're nearing the end of whats practical for everyday use.
A 5GHZ P4 with 8X AGP on chip in a tiny box - what, for copying down mom's recipes? Book reports?
Photoshop?

Fewer and fewer people are able to justify updating right now, as it is.

What do you want - UT at 800fps?

Nice idea, and I do love small-sized computers that are nice and quiet. :)

So long as it uses a standard 5.25" drive bay (not a laptop drive) and doesn't need @$&%$% low-profile expansion slots! :|
I hate low-profile! Give me a riser card anyday!

Growth has hit a slight plateau, but both Intel and AMD still forecast growth.

Sorry, but how can it be 'quiet' with 2 (two) 8cm cooling fans? Even one PSU fan makes any system non-quiet, IMO. Add another screamer, and goodbye quietness! Either no fans at all, or don't say 'quiet'!
>>

Quiet does not mean silent. Anyone who has run two Delta screamers will tell you that this is quite...

You'll be surprised how silent a PC can be. The system I built for my GF is dead silent. Outfitted the system with Panaflo fans and used a Seagate 'Cuda IV hard drive. First time I turned it on I thought the system was dead until I heard the BEEP during POST. She sleeps with the system 6 feet from her head and she doesn't hear a thing. Goes to show that even a toasty 1.4Ghz T-Bird can run 100% stable 24/7 without the need for Delta Screamers or more blowholes than a pod of dolphins. Had that not worked, I would have changed to 12dB Papst fans.

Correctly placed air ducts can seriouslly reduce your fan count and increase cooling efficiency. Many commercial servers use big stinking passive heatsinks and ducted air. Look at the A-Pro servers that power these forums. They use cardboard to keep things nice and cool. At my last company we had a old server severly damaged by heat from a failed HVAC system. The cheapass VP refused to replace the A/C system so the server room ran as hot as 130F on some days. The old server seemed to run fine after this ghetto mod was put into place. Not the prettiest nor elegent design but it goes to show targeted cooling is better than haphazradly dumping fans into a case.

one of the most important things to help make a fan quiet is how close and how "open" the grill or covering
sheetmetal pattern is. I have a sparkle 400W psu fan that was very loud, so I took it out and spliced in a
panasonic Hi speed 80mm - still loud, but better, but then I noticed my very quiet Antec true power has
a thin gold colored wire grill, with the fan recessed. So i then added rubber grommets between the newly
installed panansonic and the restrictive sheetmetal opening pattern in the back of sparkle - and viola!
