the fastest hdd in 2.5 inch form is the western digital scorpio black. it is far slower then the fastest 3.5 inch hdd >

the Scorpio black will top out at 110 during a long big file copy lots of 3.5 inch hdds got to 140 .

what interests me about you link is the 7200 rpm claim for a 2.5 inch hdd I use a lot of hdds I am not aware that a 7200 rpm 2.5 inch hdd had reach the market. I found this pdf for you.

http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/constellation2-fips-ds1719-3-1111-us.pdf

it claims a top speed of 115 for its 1tb model if it is the same as the hp (it may well be exactly that) then the 3.5 is faster

here is the 3.5 inch seagate info in the same class

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/pr...constellation-es-1/#tTabContentSpecifications

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/pr...constellation-es-1/#tTabContentSpecifications

both say 147 tops so the 3.5 inch should be quicker.

Been using 2.5-in Scorpio Blacks for over 2 years. They are 7200 RPM drives, basically for laptops where 3.5-in drives won't fit. I have replaced the Scorpio Blacks with Seagate Momentus XT hybrids, and they are3 faster. (320GB and 500GB.)

Untrue, the fastest 2.5 inch from WD is the velociraptor. One of the fastest consumer grade hard drives in the world.

well v raptors need a huge heatsink and or lots of fans. they are 10000 rpm.
I have owned a lot of them and to be fair they are quicker then the 7200 rpm drive the scorpio black. to be fair i meant but did not say the fastest 2.5 inch 7200 rpm drives..

To really argue the point 2.5 inch ssds are even faster but I did not mention that as I knew the op wants to know about 2.5 inch 7200 rpm drives.
I also left out seagate hybrid drives of 500 gb and 750 gb since the poster needed info on 7200 rpm spindle drives not hybrid. To be fair to the two that mention seagate hybrid 750gb hdds 2.5 inch drives and v-raptor 600gb 10000 rpm 2.5 inch drives both are faster then the scorpio black but they both do not fit the question of the op.

after I read a bit deeper into the op's post I realized he had very high end enterprise drives in mind. most likely the hp's he linked to are really from seagate and in the correct answer to the op that I believe I gave to him the 3.5's will be faster then the 2.5's .

3.5" should be faster sequential due to circumference.

2.5" should be faster in randoms due to being short stroked compared to 3.5". This is the reason Raptor and Cheetah class drives use 2.5" platters; the total travel of the heads from furthest track to furthest track is extremely short and combined with a high RPM you get sub 3ms seeks including rotational latency. These types of drives are all about IOPs not sequentials.

I don't consider the VelociRaptor a 2.5" drive. It's a very thick drive enclosure to house a VERY large and powerful 3.5" grade voice coil compared to a standard average weak little 2.5" drive destined for laptops.

Usually seek times on 2.5" drives are TERRIBLE even though they are technically short stroked because they have weak ass little servos and are designed for low noise and power consumption. The VelociRaptor doesn't give a f**k about either of those, it's basically a 2.5" spindle in a 2.5" casing with close to a 3.5" height with a full size heavy duty 3.5" voice coil actuator and powerful magnets. It slams the heads around like a sledge hammer at mach 20 instead of just dragging ass non nonchalantly like most 2.5" laptop drives seem to be fond of doing.

While most drives dangling from a case by cables will buck when powered on from the inertia of the platter starting up, you can sometimes see a loose dangling fully spun up VelociRaptor still shake a little bit now and then from the force of the actuator.

7200 RPM 2.5" drives have been out forever.

I've owned 5-6-7 and if yours got hot you had a bad one.

The drives with the big heatsinks were basically being adapted to 3.5" specs and the heatsinks did little or nothing except make them mount correctly.

They've always been sold without the heatsinks for 2.5" server slots which was the origional intention.

PSSSS....AFAIK the VRs still have the fastest seek time of any SATA drive.
