What's the purpose of having two springs on the linkage? Does it help with rpm surge/bounce, or why are both needed? My son is fixing up one that is missing the smaller thinner spring and I wonder if it is necessary to have. It's a $6.00 spring locally or online and he only hopes to get $25-$30 out of the mower to begin with.

Where does the larger spring connect? The gas tank/carb assembly is out of position right now and that makes it more difficult to tell what the purposes of the springs are. Is the butterfly on the carb controlled through the large spring?

I guess what I'm saying is that a picture covering both ends of the large spring with the gas tank in its proper position would be helpful. Right now the angles of the small spring makes no sense because the tank is not where it normally resides.

This is not my picture, but on my linkage, the large spring attaches to the throttle. Rotate the plate, it puts tension on the air vane which also partially opens or closes the plate inside the carb throat. Why the small spring though?
