3.5 Audio Out to Speaker Binding Posts

We have a cart that has two built-in speakers in it. In that cart is a PC with 3.5 audio out and I want to power those two speakers.

I am assuming the best way would be to use a 3.5 to RCA cable to a receiver (would have to buy one) then speaker wire to the speakers?

How bad of an idea would it be to take a set of 3.5 earbuds, cut off the buds and splice speaker wire to it? Burn something up, bad? 😱

Get a cheap stereo amp or receiver off of craigslist or ebay. 3.5mm to dual RCA from PC to amp, then speaker wire from amp to speakers. The 3.5mm out should be treated like line level. If you tried to wire them directly you would get too little volume out of the speakers and/or burn up the opamp on the mobo.
