3.4E or.....?

I have a new 3.4E p4 that I have on a Intel 874pbz with 2 gb of crucial pc3200. Im going to get a 6800ultra soon as well. My question is, in your respective opinions, whether or not I would see much benifit in selling my p4 and going with Athlon 64. If i were to sell, what would be an equivalently priced A64? Im trying to decide if there is enough of a difference to justify changing. Post your thoughts.

What are you primarily doing with this computer, gaming ? (sounds like it with that video card) If so, then get an Athlon 3400+ on the nforce3 250 platform. In games its faster, and DEFINITELY much cooler running that the P4E. Maybe cheaper too.

I have a MSI K8N Neo Platinum already, so it would probably be pretty easy to sell my 3.4 and pick up a 3400+. Yeah, I will do gaming. Other things as well, but that will be the most intensive thing I do. How much preformance am I going to get out of this though? Enough to justify the hassle? Or will it be minimal?

anywhere from nothing to 30% untill 64 bit catches on, then who knows. Maybe 30%-300% more ?? Really an unknown right now, but some preliminary benches of beta are all over the place.

the 3400+ is faster then the 3.4E in everyway besides encoding. the 3.4C is even faster then the 3.4E, so you'll want to pick one of the others.

I know the difference between the 3.4c and e, and it is extremely minimal. I got this processor through a raffle, and I am wondering if it is worth the effort to swap it. I havent really decided yet.

If you are asking if you are going to get more FPS in games by switching, then the answer is no. The difference between the 3.4E and any of the A64's will be so minimal right now. Wait a while for 64-bit stuff to really catch on (prolly happen when Intel comes out with its own version) and then make a decision to switch to 64-bits. Right now, with a 6800U, your computer will be able to run at the top for at least a whole year.

the reason y people are getting 64-bit cpu's right now is not because of the fact it's 64-bit. its because the cpu in 32-bit mode actually performs superior compared to other 32-bit cpu's. with the 3.4E compared to the 3.4C, the 3.4E runs in performance compared with the 3.2C, but is only superior in encoding and decoding because of the extra L2 Cache. in relation with the athlon 64 and the P4C, the athlon performs 10-15% stronger then the pentium and in encoding, the P4C performs about 15% stronger then the athlon 64. as for the 3.4E, its even worse then the 3.4C in everything except encoding, in which is, i'm guessing, 5% stronger. the prescotts were made to have the biggest improvements in the 4.0+ ghz area. right now, i'd say its still premature.
