Hello,

I had a P4 2.4C and I just bought an OEM 3.4C, but it looks like my Retail 2.4C fan isn't doing the job. I can't get the processor to stay stable at stock speed, and even when I UNDERCLOCK the processor down to like 2.2MHz I'm still pushing 70C when I run Prime95.

Question: Are 3.4C retail fans bigger than 2.4C fans???
Another question: Can someone recommend me a good fan for my 3.4C?? I want to try to spend less than $35 unless there is some uber fan for a little more...

Thanks for the help everyone.

No, you probably did not add thermal compound between the processor and the fan. If you chose to skip this, it was a bad idea. Thermal compound, namely Arctic Silver 5 is vitally important to thermal transfer from the CPU to the Heatsink.

Ok thanks for the help, can I just buy some thermal compound at radio shack?? Will that be good enough?

I found a site with some guy using toothpaste on his CPU!! Can I just go with the toothpaste until the AS comes in the mail/??

I've read about using toothpaste before as a temporary solution, but I've never done it. Searching Google would be your best bet. I don't know how well it'd work since I don't know the thermal conductivity of toothpaste.

ok after further review it seems my problem was the power supply, 3.4C + 6800 LE = one sad 350W power supply :(

Cooling may have been a problem, but I was able to boot to windows with my 9800 Pro + 3.4C, not with my 6800 + 3.4C though. I'll be sure to order some arctic silver along with the PS though, thanks for the help everyone.

The 3.2C and above retail processors come w/ a bigger fan & better heat sink. They add alot of copper in the base of the retail heatsinks.

Never run your system without first slathering on some thermal compound. This can not be more strongly stressed.

If you put your system together without anything on there, shut down immediately!!!!!!!!

The Radio Shack stuff will be OK, do not use toothpaste.

do yourself a favor. If you havent put this together yet, just wait for the AS 5
AVOID the radio shack crap, because when you do decide to use AS 5 (which you will)
you will not have to remove the shack crap.

Also, for $40 to $50 shipped, you can get the XP 90, one of the most badass heatsinks available.
Another few bucks for a good fan, and that CPU will be very happy. Highly recommended.

Yeah, there is 1GHZ differance there, you'll need a new HS/F.

I'd recommend the Zalman 7000 series, but go for the XP-90 if you don't mind spending a bit more.

AS5 is complete waste of money unless you are overclocking, both Zalman and Thermalright come with thermal compound that will do the job just fine.
